The “European Fashion Trends” project was implemented from 1 June 2015 to 31 May 2016. The project enabled us to send 15 female Fashion Design students to Northern Portugal for internships in textile companies. The individual cycles of the project took place at the end of October / beginning of November 2015, turn of February and March 2016, and April 2016. 5 girls participated in each cycle, accompanied by a supervisor because of the presence of underage students in the group.
The project and its programme were designed to be work-oriented. The participants worked in the Camorsil and the Com-prensa companies, which are located in the cities Barcelos and Braga in the Minho region in Northern Portugal. The internship lasted two weeks, including 10 working days. With regard to the conditions of work placements in the Czech Republic the students worked 6-6,5 hours a day.
The “European Fashion Trends” project followed our previous projects enabling students to gain work experience abroad. That is why the project was run by a team of experienced staff members, with a clearly defined organizational structure regarding the management of the project. The project roles had been divided between our school and our Portuguese partner, Mobility Friends. The partnership was also secured by a contract. Contracts were signed with the participants as well. We used the contract documents for KA1 Erasmus+ Programme: Learning Agreement and Quality Commitment. The programme was designed to comply with the qualification standard for the Textile designer vocation according to the National Register of Qualifications with respect to the EQF system. The practical tasks covered focused on fashion design and styling with the help of computer programmes, on the design of individual pieces and of fabric patterns, on the selection of suitable material and pattern, dyeing of fabric and working with the material, on sewing clothes, draping fabric, and last but not least on the internal logistics of textile companies along with product protection and storage. The students also worked with a laser printer (for printing on fabric) and with a laser cutting machine. They also took part in the completion of production and in the quality control thereof.
The project was prepared in cooperation with Mobility Friends, an organization already familiar to us, who arranged internships for our students in both companies. We've already worked with them successfully on mobility projects in the past. By implementing this project we wanted to support the traditional industry in North Bohemia, where fashion design is returning to the spotlight thanks to the establishment of private fashion studios.
The project proposal was prepared due to our need to give our students the opportunity to utilize in practice the skills acquired through theoretical instruction. The world of fashion is constantly in a state of flux and subject to change several times throughout the year. The Czech Republic is not a trendsetter, but rather a follower. That is why our designers have to find inspiration abroad, and have to be able to take in new ideas, trends and input. Moreover, we wanted to enable the students to gain work experience in a bigger business, where they could see how big collections are manufactured and sold, and where they could try their hands at all of this. Textile industry is still going strong in Northern Portugal, so it was an ideal destination for our project.
During their internships in the Camorsil and Comprensa companies the participants learned new practical skills regarding serial production of textiles, and they also had the opportunity to get inspired and to learn to work with specialized machines used in textile manufacturing (laser printers and cutters). They also improved their English. Therefore they'll have a better starting position upon entering the job market in the future, both in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe. Thanks to making new contacts they could also work in Portugal, as they were praised by both companies.
With this project we wanted to contribute to the renaissance of the traditional industry in the Liberec region, which has been associated with the textile industry for almost 300 years. The project was also meant to contribute to the fulfilment of the goals of the European policy regarding education, of the goals regarding the cooperation between schools and businesses, or of the goals of the European Commission regarding the support of vocational education and innovation of teaching methods. The project also complied with the development strategy of our school, which shall be open to international activities in the future as well.
As proof of their work experience the students received the Europass Mobility Certificates. For future projects we wish to utilize the ECVET system in order to further facilitate the process of recognition of the mobilities by employers not only in the Czech Republic but also across Europe.
