Grape cultivation and wine production have significant importance both in Serbia and Hungary. Besides the profit production this agricultural branch has emerging an importance in sustaining rural life and tourism. Viticulture is endangered by several pathogens and pests which are transmitted by propagating material. Therefore it is basically important to use healthy plants for plantations. Virus-free plants are selected following indexing on indicators, but this method does not eliminate phytolasmas or bacterial infections. To this end dormant canes will be treated in hot water to eliminate all pests, phytoplasmas and certain bacteria. This material will be forced to obtain shoots. Then sterile in vitro cultures will be started from shoot tips to get rid off remaining bacteria (and viruses). Grapevine plant lines obtained by this three-step protocol will be tested for the presence of the most important pathogens by microbiological and molecular methods. Pathogen free lines will be used to establish prebasis plantations that provide propagating material for growers to establish productive plantations. During this work we plan to free 20 traditional and recently bred varieties which are important in both countries. Varieties will be exchanged between the contributing sides and tested for higher quality production and disease resistance to promote environmentally safe viticulture. During the project we publish a book both in Serbian and Hungarian language on the locally most important table and wine grape varieties and their clones. Diseases including viruses, phytoplasmas and bacteria which are transmitted by propagating material and protocols for their identification and for production of healthy plants will also be described in applicable detail. Results of our work will be presented for grape growers and wine makers in four workshops and meetings organized twice in Serbia and also twice in Hungary. During this meetings we present the regionally most important grapevine varieties, clones and their products. Scientific lectures on the project program will also be presented. Achievements: Pathogen-free propagating stocks were established by in vitro shoot tips following hot water treatment. For this work traditional and newly bred Serbian and Hungarian grapevine varieties were used. Exhaustive plant health quarantene studies were carried out to test and confirm thepathogen-free status of this material followed by certification. Propagating material of 10 pathogen-free varieties were transported from Hungary (Kecskemét) to the Serbian project partner (Novi Sad).Exchange of new varieties and clones.Several technical improvements were also made to help the project implementation. These include gettig a new water bath, new isolator house, renewal of greenhouse, equipments and renewal for phytotrone. Viticultural and enological evaluation of autochtone and newly bred grapevine varieties grown in the Serbian-Hungarian border region were also carried out. Threestainless steel containers for preparing wines were purchased.A book on regional viticulture and a short film were made in Serbian and Hungarian.
