The aim of work placements abroad is to enable the participants to broaden their vocational, professional, linguistic and social horizons. Europe as a whole requires and supports professional mobility. Therefore it is very important for young people during their training to gain work experience abroad, to acquire intercultural competences and to improve their knowledge of foreign languages in order to act appropriately when dealing with people from other nationalities in a certain context. Our German partners in vocational training highly appreciate such knowledge of their young apprentices. We increasingly recognize that also our partners abroad are more and more interested in finding adequate work placements for the participants and are willing to support them in every respect during their stay abroad. Their positive engagement in this project has noticeably increased since we started to work together more than 7 years ago. In addition we clearly recognize a growing interest of the students/apprentices at our school in such programmes that foster professional mobility. Therefore we feel validated in our work. The participants are either doing their apprenticeship (industrial clerk) or a two-year-vocational training at our school. We are planning to place 50 people abroad (20 apprentices, 30 pupils in pre-vocational training). The apprentices are in their second year of training, as are the pupils, who finish school at the end of the second year. The project takes place from 1 June 2015 until 31 May 2017. It will be realized with the assistance of our partner in Great Britain and the European subsidiary offices of the German companies responsible for the dual education of their apprentices. The sending institution and the German companies are primarily responsible for the selection of participants. This is also true for the practical and administrative work. During this stage, the cooperation with our foreign partners is becoming increasingly important because all parties are included in the formulation of a learning agreement. While the placements are taking place, it is very important to have a tight and reliable communication network, as the responsible team members of the sending institution work hand in hand with the contact persons in the receiving organisations and the participants in order to carry out the programme successfully. After the placement, the sending institution conducts follow-up meetings and written evaluations with the participants. Their expectations, results, insights and the impact the work experience has had on them are documented accordingly. The aim of the project is that all this experience has a supporting and consolidating influence on the personal and professional development of the participant. In the long run it may help them to broaden their professional possibilities. At the same time it is our goal to connect all the participating groups within Europe and to create contacts by working together, thereby supporting the idea of a closely interconnected and unified Europe.
