European Voluntary Service Try-Out
Date du début: 1 sept. 2015, Date de fin: 31 juil. 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The project wants to bring young people closer to a sustainable lifestyle to encourage them to reflect on the importance of sustainable&environmentally friendly food as part of an active EU citizenship, a contribution to various environmental challenges and a contribution to a healthy lifestyle. We furthermore want to demonstrate to young people how important it is to get actively involved in grassroots activities As a first try out one volunteer from Italy interested in communication as well as and environmental and animal rights issues join edthe office of Viva las Vega's from September 2015 for 10 months in order to learn more about sustainable lifestyle and food Starting from VLV's core issues (sustainable food and events climate change, healthy living), this volunteers was invited to further develop her major interests and concerns in the specific working area of Viva Las Vega's that she choose and where she was able to develop and be responsible for her own project. To complement her learning experience, a set of interactive training courses about Viva Las Vega's working areas, seminars, conferences and study visits were organized. Our volunteer worked was asked to set up a seminar session for young people (from the EVS network and beyond) focusing on healthy food choices/food production and the impact these choices have on the community and EU level. Topics included the environmental impact of food choices and how to include healthy and sustainable food choices in an urban lifestyle. The volunteer was encouraged to organise herself and take responsibility for all the steps of the preparation, implementation and possible follow-up with VLV staff supervising and helping her whenever needed. In the end we mutually decided to change the topic of the training to a broader topic related to volunteer management. Together with an intern our EVS volunteer was involved in the invitation of international participants and putting together a diverse program. Due to her own background in external communications, our EVS-volunteer proposed to help us out with social media as well. She turned out to be a real social media guru :) In the 10 months she spent with our organization she managed to raise the amount of Facebook likes on our page from 4000 to 17.000 and counting! Because of her exceptional commitment and passion for the topic our our foundation, we were blessed to have her with us. The combination of these activities as a result enabled the volunteer to gain a broader overview of the vegetarians movement, enhancing at the same time her language and practical skills and her personal awareness of the Dutch culture. Volunteers are part of a young, multicultural team, and supported by office staff and volunteers. Volunteers receive both individual and team tasks, with a constant supervision, assistance and final evaluation. In the long run, we hope that our volunteer found the knowledge and skills gained during her stay at Viva las Vega's useful for her future and might get engaged in a movement for sustainable food or an environmental movement and can raise awareness amongst more young people about the importance of these issues. We also expect that both through the promotion of the project through VLV, the sending organisations and the volunteers, more young people are interested in joining the EVS programme and new possibilities of cooperation arise for the organisations involved in the project.
