This application will fill an important gap in Jean Monnet provision in the United Kingdom by providing excellent teaching for university students in European Union public policy and administration, with a particular focus on the European Union’s budget and the reform of the financing of the budget. Teaching will also include the institutional politics of the European Union, the roles of public opinion in its evolution, and the case of the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union, for which one of the most controversial topics has been that of the European Union’s budget and its financing. Professional training on the European Union’s budget will also be offered for public administrators, journalists and interest groups in one-day workshops that will take place in London. Introductory training on the European Union will be made available for British high school teachers again at one-day workshops in London. An academic workshop in Brussels on the European Union budget review and own resources reform will involve researchers on the budget and administrators from the European Union institutions and will lead to a journal special issue on change to the European Union budget. A book will be authored on past changes and future reforms to the budget in the lead-up to the next multiannual financial framework of the European Union that takes effect in 2021. This and the journal special issue will inform a wider audience made of students and specialists and will be a basis for future teaching.Finally, two Jean Monnet lectures will be held to inform students and the public about i) the European Union budget and ii) United Kingdom-European Union relations. This will be an exercise in public engagement that will be widely advertised and then podcast in order to promote debate about the European Union.The teaching, training and research resources listed above will be made available online, and will be advertised using social media.
