European Harmonized Training for Personnel working with Adhesive Bonding Technology
Date du début: 1 sept. 2015, Date de fin: 31 août 2018 PROJET  TERMINÉ

REASON FOR THE PROJECT: The idea for this project, submitted to the Portuguese Erasmus+ National Agency, arises from the fact that there is a lack of training materials and qualified personnel on the adhesive technology. Adhesive bonding technologies are getting a worldwide diffusion in many industrial sectors, such as aeronautic, automotive, shipping and railway ones. According to a report of AVISA (a Federchimica Association), which represents manufacturers of adhesives in Italy, the average value of adhesive used was more than 2.3 million tons/year. After the economic crisis of 2008-2009,which caused a drop of 5-6% of the global demand in this sector, the adhesive demand growth resumed in 2010, supported by a recovery in the industrialized nations and a strong upswing in the emerging markets (China, India, Brazil, Eastern Europe). Nowadays, according to Adhesives&Sealants Industry, Europe is the 2nd largest regional consumer of formulated adhesives, with 30% of the world’s volume. This calls for a harmonized training solution for all the personnel working in this sectors. AIMS & OBJECTIVES: The project aims at avoiding the skills mismatch of the employers of companies involved in adhesive bonding manufacturing or repairing processes. This will be done by developing an harmonized training course of personnel involved in this activities, focusing not only in large enterprises but also in SMEs in different European countries, and to review and update the European Adhesive Bonder, Specialist and Engineer profiles. This objective will be achieved through the definition of educational materials for the training of personnel. CONSORTIUM: The consortium is constituted by six partners. UPORTO will act as Project Coordinator, in direct contact with the National Agency from Portugal. EWF is the European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting, with a Training and Qualification network covering 31 member countries that will be essential in the implementation and dissemination of AdTech results. Two of the partners are the welding institutes of Portugal (ISQ), Slovenia (IZV) and Spain (CESOL), which have strong knowledge and expertise in training and qualification at a sector-based level. All partners also have plenty of experience in the implementation and training of European Directives. OUTCOMES: The objectives will be achieved through the definition of a harmonized curriculum for the training of personnel involved in the adhesive bonding in the industry. For this purpose, at the start of the project, a study will be carried out in order to understand the specific requirements in terms of qualifications in different countries and in different industries, where welding plays an important role. This will allow the development of an harmonized European training curriculum. IMPACT: According to a study by the consulting firm Kusumgar, Nerlfi & Growney, global consumption of formulated adhesives was 10.24 million tons in 2014 worth EUR 27.58 billion. Volume has increased modestly since the 2009 recession and a 5% annual rate of growth is forecast through 2019. Growth in Europe and North America is forecast at a mature 2% annual rate. These statistics stress the need for addressing the qualification and certification of the personnel involved in adhesive bonding manufacturing and repairing processes. The updating of the three professional profiles will allow to target the above European market need, demonstrating the high impact that AdTech will have at all levels (local, regional, national and European).
