European Forum Pilsen 2015 was a seven-day event, organised by Evropský parlament mládeže v ČR, z.s., (EYP CZ) which took place in the city of Pilsen, European Capital of Culture 2015. This Forum gathered around 100 young Europeans from various European countries in order to discuss current political issues. The main objective of this conference was to support the development of young people into responsible and politically aware citizens, by involving them in European political thinking, and promoting intercultural understanding. Creating a platform for free exchange of ideas and teamwork gives the participants an opportunity to express their opinions and develop their skills and knowledge. Participants of this conference were high school and university students, taking different roles at the session. Delegates were high school students, who have already attended at least one session of EYP and have been selected by their National Committee to represent their country at this event or those who have successfully gone through the application and selection process of the Forum. Officials were high school or university students, who are experienced members of the EYP and have participated in many events in different roles. The Officials' Team was responsible for the academic quality, organisation excellence and comfortable atmosphere of the conference.
Delegates were divided into 7 committees (working groups) – each committee was assigned its own topic (usually a current pressing European issue). The outcome was a resolution, i.e. a proposal on how the issue should be tackled. All committees then gathered in the General Assembly, where these resolutions were presented, debated and voted on. The discussions in the committees and the debates during the General Assembly were led by a Chairperson who is responsible for the factual correctness and smooth process. The process of drafting the resolution was also accompanied by a talk with two experts that the delegates had a chance to experience – the experts were two skilled members of the European Youth Parliament Czech Republic, who talked to the participants during the programme on Frida 14 August about their topics and provided insights thereon.
Due to the internationality among the participants, the official working language during the conference is English. Apart from the academic part of the conference, there was also a concomitant programme, which includes for example Eurovillage, where each country has an opportunity to present their culture to the others, various workshops on different topics, etc.
The resolutions that were approved during the General Assembly are considered to be the result with the biggest impact. These were sent further to the hands of some Members of the European Parliament, or to the European Commission. There, they were commented on and taken into consideration. Two MEPs have already told us they they familiarised themselves with the resolutions and that they will bear them in mind throughout their work in the Parliament. However, it is also important to realise the value of the very enriching impact on every single participant.
The European Forum Pilsen 2015 allowed the attendees to develop their skills, broaden their horizons while meeting young people from all around Europe, and extend their knowledge. It was also an extraordinary opportunity for the students to have an influence and contribute to solve current issues. Events of this kinds help raise young people´s interest in politics and encourage them to become active citizens, which may be beneficial for all of Europe in the future.
