The Neutron Physics Unit of the EC-JRC-IRMM (Geel, Belgium) is equipped with a unique scientific infrastructure of European relevance. This research infrastructure, which to a large extent is operating for highly accurate neutron cross-section measurements, includes two accelerators facilities: GELINA is a 150 MeV electron accelerator serving as strong white neutron source for high-resolution neutron time-of-flight measurements. The 7 MV Van de Graaff facility is an electrostatic accelerator for the production of continuous and pulsed proton-, deuteron- and helium ion beams which is serving as a source of well characterised quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The measurement capabilities at both facilities, which are complementary, cover the whole energy range from a few meV to about 24 MeV. A Transnational Access project NUDAME has been running within the framework of the FP6 Euratom programme until March 31, 2008. This NUDAME project has proved to be successful with a high quality of research proposals and a large proportion of new users that were attracted. In total, 22 experiments were proposed, exceeding about 2.5 times the beam time which could be provided. 18 proposals were approved by the Programme Advisory Committee of NUDAME, but with a drastically reduced beam time. 90% of the supported users are first-time users. The large demand for experimental opportunities at the scientific infrastructure of IRMM shows clearly the need for support of scientific groups from the European Union. It is the objective of this proposal to offer for the next four years a total of 4500 hours of additional data-taking hours for external users. Experiments in the thematic area addressed in the 7th Euratom Fission Framework Programme can be performed provided that the experimental infrastructure can offer a significant added value to the project. Selection of the supported experiments is based on peer review.
