In Flanders, teaching 'Europe' is part of the curriculum. However, teachers find it hard to put this into practice. Moreover, a study on 'General knowledge of students in teacher training in Flanders' (January 2013, KHLim) shows that future teachers are lacking general knowledge on the EU. Therefore the focus of this proposal 'Europa in de klas' is threefold. First, the project proposes 'train the trainers' activities to support (future) teachers and create an environment to enhance their enthusiasm and knowledge on the theme. - Teacher training day 'elections 2014' for Flemish teachers in primary and secondary education- Workshops for students in teacher training on how to teach 'Europe' in the classroom - Workshop for pupils in vocational education and their teachers Second, we want to provide up-to-date, tailor made and high quality didactic material for primary and secondary education in Flanders through the database www.europaindeklas.be and new material on the 'EU elections 2014'. Third, we intend to create a partnership with stakeholders on the elections 2014, to guarantee a broad impact. The expected impact is that we develop a supportive environment for teachers in Flanders to work on the theme 'Europe' in the classroom, based on the specifity of the Flemish education system and curriculum. Throughout the project teachers gain knowledge on the EU, have the material to work on the subject and know where to find it. Based on previous experience, we expect to reach more than 20.000 students and teachers in Flanders.
