EU MEDiterranean Border Crises and European External Action

EUMedEA proposes a new perspective on EU external action. Since the scientific debate on the EU international actorness is currently at a stalemate, this JMC departs from the nature of the EU action - either normative, idealist or realist, to address the more substantive essence of European external action to address EU Med border crises. The European Security Strategy and the Lisbon Treaty urge the EU to play a global role. The JMC explores content and outcomes of EU strategies and initiatives to face Med border crises such as popular uprisings, increasing migration flows, Islamist resurgence, terrorism, or energy supplies. There is a continuous demand of more qualified knowledge on Med border crises that have a direct impact on society. The JMC responds to this need and provides innovative, in-depth multidisciplinary teaching on EU external action to face regional crises.OBJECTIVESThe proposed Chair: - provides specialised teaching, research and training on EUMedEA through innovative methodologies and tools- increases the awareness of European citizens on specific Med crises.ACTIVITIESThe proposed JMC foresees:- new and existing teaching on EUMedEA;- an academic high qualified network on EUMedEA;- training of BA, MA and PhD students thanks to experts, NGOs civil servants and relevant stakeholders.MAIN OUTPUTS- JMC website;- Open Educational Resources (OER);- Alumni database;- Publications (EUMedEA working papers and a Special Issue).OUTCOMES- In-depth teaching and research on EUMedEA;- Close interaction between civil society and the target groups;- Support to PhD students and young researchers.IMPACT- Improve students’ oral and written skills;- Increase of students’ complementary skills (e.g. team work);- Socialize students to civil society association activities;- Provide policy advice.The JMC activities are to be assessed via specific performance indicators.
