The Mark Twain School is an all-day primary school in a socially deprived area of Berlin. We have roughly 400 students that attend the school, of which about 70% speak German as a second language. Due to the European political development in the last couple of years, the number of students who come to our school with little or no German has increased. Currently we have about 50 students in this category. This situation is very challenging for the students and is an enormous challenge for the school. We would like to support our staff, and therefore our students, with conceptual intercultural training courses. We would like to find out how other European schools meet this challenge. Our aim is to extend and deepen the intercultural and language teaching skills of our teachers, so that they can support the children as best as possible. Four teachers did participate in the training course in Porto to gain intercultural project management skills. We were able to make connections with other schools for future projects. Throughout the school the is an interest of colleagues to participate in European training courses. During the project we evaluated how we can integrate the outcomes from the training course and from future exchange projects into our school program. In the future students will be motivated to participate in the European program in order to establish permanent intercultural exchange projects at our school. We will offer our students the use of eTwinning, so that they can communicate with their peers in other European countries. Through the school partnerships, students will improve their language and intercultural skills. We hope that through a future Erasmus+ program and the intercultural exchange, the students will be inspired to become more open and tolerant individuals. The teachers will also broaden their intercultural skills and the new language teaching skills will allow them greater flexibility and competence in dealing with students with little or no knowledge of the German language. This will enable the teachers to meet the student’s needs and support them with their language learning as best as possible. We hope to support the students to reach their full potential, their personal goals, and open up their opportunities in the European labour market.
