The number of students who leave school at an early stage or who do not go to school regularly is significant. This fact means the individuals, who could not complete even compulsory education, do not have adequate opportunities to make use of learning at later stages of their lives, do have limited opportunities to develop their skills for employment, therefore deprivation and poverty. The students who leave school at early stages need social programs and support more than others during their lifetimes. These individuals work with lower salaries and the income difference between them and the individuals with education gets bigger. The individuals who work with lower salaries do not contribute to the quality of the social life and the development of the democratic life in an adequate manner. Moreover, social costs of leaving school at early stages also include workforce with low skills, low efficiency, income losses, increasing crime rates. As for our country and society, economic losses and all social losses which may associate with poor education may continue during the lifetime of such individuals, which are critical negative outcomes. Therefore, this project focuses on determining the reasons of leaving school firstly in our school and in our region, and establishing proposals for solution in order to prevent dropouts. This project will shed light on determining the reasons of dropouts in a correct manner and variables which are effective for dropouts, and developing policies and applications for preventing dropouts. In this framework, it is expected that outcomes of this project will be guiding for policy-makers, decision-maker authorities, researchers, and academicians in this field.
In order to achieve the expected goals, our project includes the teachers in our school visiting the Netherlands and Denmark for examining the training in experienced schools for two weeks which carried out successful studies in early dropouts. For the selection of participants, it is fundamental that our teachers will be willing and voluntary. Our teachers who want to participate in the project will fill in application forms, and the forms will be evaluated by an external expert for a partial selection process. During the evaluation process, selection criteria for the participants will be used, and a transparent and fair selection process will be carried out. There are currently 48 teachers in our school, and 10 teachers will be selected as original participants and 10 as substitute members for the project.
The participants of the project will be divided into two groups of 5 teachers in order to prevent any disruption in the teaching and training process, and studies in two different countries will be examined. The project participants will make observations in hosting organizations and will have training in order to decrease early dropouts. The project participants will disseminate their learning outcomes firstly in our school and then in our province and region via various activities when they return to Turkey. Thanks to outcomes of the project, students and parents of the students will be accessed with the most correct channel, regular attendance to secondary education, and the rate of taking the transition to higher education will be increased. This will increase the employment percentage of our students.
Our participant teachers will have the opportunity to observe studies in a different country, and to get to know a new society, culture and style of living. At the same time, their foreign language abilities will be developed as they will have to communicate in English for a term of two weeks. Our teachers, who will be familiar with a different culture, will be a intermediaries for eradicating prejudices between societies. Our school will obtain the ability to implement an international project and will have experience for further projects in the future.
