Project Title: Common Values of Different Cultures. Subject: Democratic values and Tolerance. ROJECT CONTEXT: A delegation of teachers from Tartu Annelinna Gymnasium, Estonia, visited their counterparts at Tbilisi School no. 98, in Tbilisi, Georgia on 13.05 - 17.05. 2013. On that occasion, the schools’ representatives signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing bilateral programmes for the personal and professional development of their respective students and faculty. The MOU focuses on cooperation in two critical areas: educational exchange and the promotion of European Union civic and democratic values PROJECT OBJECTIVES: The aim of the project are to develop critical thinking skills, multinational teamwork ability, and project management skills for students of both schools. Upon completion of this project, students will have enhanced awareness of cultural diversity within a national context, making them Ambassadors of Excellence in cultural awareness and tolerance. Using the educational environment, the students are led to appreciate cultural diversity and increase their sensitivity to the value of the cultural heritage of national and ethnic minorities in their midst. PROJECT PARTICIPANTS: The project involves thirty (30) people directly between the two schools; six (6) girls and six (6) boys, along with three (3) project coordinators from Annelinna Gymnasium, and six (6) girls and six (6) boys, along with three (3) project coordinators from Tbilisi School no. 98. The activities of this project will indirectly involve up to seven hundred (700) youth in the host school (Annelinna Gymnasium). PROJECT ACTIVITIES: The project activities support opportunities for student development and exchanges for national and ethnic minorities in Estonia and in Georgia. They are aimed at developing students’ personal and professional skills and at raising awareness about Estonian and Georgian culture, history and at the promotion of democratic values of the European Union. Such activities as Promotional material development, Tolerance Awareness Sessions. We Understand Each Other Joint Concert, Estonian National Culture Presentation, Integrated Virtual Collaborative Environment will be held. The following methods used: Roundtables, Workshops on National Symbols, Ethnic Attire and Customs, School visits and lesson exchanges, Quiz on Estonian Culture Today, Public speaking opportunities, Research and practical work, concluding with defence, Creation and use of an Integrated Virtual Collaborative Environment. RESULTS Participants at the end of the project will be Ambassadors of Excellence able to reflect the values of tolerance and cultural awareness of the European Union. Ambassadors of Excellence will have acquired – through cultural exposure, educational activities and practical work – critical thinking skills, enhanced project management skills, and will have developed the attitudes necessary to successfully complete projects as part of a multinational team. The project will also act model of interaction for the participating schools, and provide a feasibility study to expand collaboration to other areas or institutions. The students’ work and information about the events and experiences they will have shared during the project will be published on the Integrated Virtual Collaborative Environment, with links to Annelinna Gymnasium and Tbilisi School no. 98 websites.
