Equipment for Customs Posts in the Region of Central Macedonia

The Customs Posts of Doirani, Eidomeni, and Evzonoi belong to the Province of Kilkis in the Region of Central Macedonia and constitute significant entry and exit points between our country and the neighboring Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In total, they are crossed annually by more than 2,000,000 passengers, 187,000 private cars, 200,000 trucks, and 80,000 cars of freight trains (at the Eidomeni Customs Post). This specific area forms part of the most important axis of the Balkan Peninsula, especially after the extension of road axes (Via Egnatia and PATHE), and is considered one of the largest routes for the trafficking of narcotic, psychotropic, and other illegal substances, but also weapons, gold, other precious and semi-precious stones, as well as other items such as petroleum products, cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, textiles, leather goods, clothing and footwear, technology products, and other goods, mainly with high customs duty values, of which intense smuggling is observed.Export traffic through the Customs posts in question is particularly high, given that for Greek exports, Greece now constitutes the third most important trading partner of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The project refers to the procurement of two self-moving x-ray systems for the inspection of baggage and packages, two closed circuits for the electronic recording of incoming and departing vehicles, four flexible probes with video, as well as nine special on-road and off-road vehicles that can also function under difficult driving and weather conditions, for the reinforcement of enforcement teams and the transporting of specially trained detection dogs. More specifically: 1. Sub-project : procurement of two self-moving x-ray systems (detection systems with x rays) used for the inspection (with the help of a radiological image) of the contents of the baggage and packages of transiting passengers. That is, they inspect whether various products and goods that are subject to prohibitions or restrictions are being transported illegally. The scanning of the baggage and packages takes place with their movement along the length of the self-moving system. In this way, both the content of the packages and objects that are hidden in specially made spaces are revealed. In particular, the x-ray system in question allows the scanning of the baggage, giving the operator the possibility to compare, inspect, and observe their internal contents. 2. Sub-project : procurement of two closed circuits with automatic electronic recording of entering and exiting vehicles and containers based on the license plate numbers of the vehicles and the number written on the containers. The recording of the data in a database takes place automatically and they can be reacquired by authorized users. The system is based on the scanning of the above data (license plates – container number), dividing the vehicles into categories: private cars, buses, trucks, and nationalities. Among other things, the system also has the capacity of interactive connection of the database with other databases (SCHENGEN, etc.). 3. Sub-project : procurement of four flexible probes with video, which allow internal searches in extremely difficult points to access, such as gaps and slots, floorboards, beams of vehicles or cavities in the fuel tanks of boats and other means of transportation, inside which narcotics and psychotropic substances, weapons, and other items subject to restrictions and prohibitions are usually hidden. Its flexible parts are waterproof and can be dipped inside liquids such as petroleum products, lubricants, alkaline and acid solutions, and with an appropriate sheath, in acids or untreated industrial waste. The flexible probe with video also provides the possibility of monitoring the search by not only the operator but also other people via the monitor. It constitutes modern equipment that contributes to reducing search time for inspected vehicles and to combating cross-border crime.4. Sub-project : procurement of nine special vehicles that can be used under difficult weather conditions and for driving on and off the road for the support of enforcement teams and for transporting detection dogs.
