The project “Training for the digital classroom” was created by the need to train the teachers of our school in the new digital learning technologies. Our school has installed IWBs in all the classrooms three years ago and the teachers try to use the technology provided in a more creative and interactive way. The framework of the school’s operation and development recognizes the necessity to have a core of teachers who will train the new teachers in the school, but they will also extend the collaboration with other schools in the area, thus diffusing their expertise. The basic aims of the project “Training for the digital classroom” were: - training the school’s teachers in the interactive learning technologies so as to enhance their teaching skills and respond to the digital class of the future, and - developing their English language skills (technical terminology). Six permanent teachers of our school participated in the project’s pedagogical team; they are certified in the use of ICT tools in education and have a medium to proficient level of English. Only the four of them participated in the training seminar abroad, for reasons of ‘force majeure’. The activities implemented in the project were as follows: 1. Training seminars on the IWBs Three training seminars were materialized by an associate of the University of Athens; they involved the creation of learning materials for IWBs and all the school teachers participated in the seminars. 2. Participants’ selection During a special meeting of all the school teachers, the selection of the six teachers to form the pedagogical project team took place. 3. Needs questionnaire The pedagogical team created and filled in a questionnaire in order to record the teachers’ needs and expectations in relation to the use of digital tools in the classroom and their knowledge of the English language. 4. Linguistic training Two in-school training meetings were carried out by school teachers, where the pedagogical project team participated: a. teaching English educational terminology, b. technical preparation in English for the seminar in Belgium. 5. Technical preparation A three-hour preparation of the pedagogical project team in digital tools was carried out, aiming at the most effective participation in the training seminar in Belgium. 6. Personnel training abroad The mobility of four school teachers was materialized in Brussels, participating in a 5-day training course entitled “Interactive technologies for the future classroom” at the Future Classroom Lab. 7. In-school training The four teachers that participated in the mobility carried out a training of all school staff in all the thematic areas of the course “Interactive technologies for the future classroom”. 8. Inter-school training - dissemination With the scientific preparation of the pedagogical project team, the school organized an open 1-day conference to diffuse the project results in the educational community. The guest speaker was an associate from the Future Classroom Lab, and the four school teachers who participated in the mobility were the trainers. The results of the project “Training for the digital classroom” include: • the technological empowerment of the participating teachers • the ability to use interactive digital tools to enrich the teaching process • the augmented motivation in using new teaching methods • the professional development of the participants • the reinforcement of the participants’ social skills and self-esteem • the expansion of the European dimension of education • the ability to train the school staff and teachers from other schools • the cooperation, motivation and support of other educators to differentiate their teaching • the dissemination of the project to educators who participated in the conference • the cooperation with the school counselor for other presentations of the conference topics. The greatest impact to the school is: a. the improvement of the quality and the effectiveness of the education provided, through the use of digital tools and the empowerment of the educational staff, and b. the collaboration and the support of educators from other schools in order to further diffuse the project and its results. The long-term benefits of the project include the evolution of the traditional teaching to an innovative teaching that integrates interactive, collaborative and playful educational activities, which will be more effective for the pupils and more targeted to their particular needs. Additionally, the creation of a core of teachers who are technologically up-to-date and form support and training units for other educators, is undoubtedly considered a benefit of this project for the school.
