TERMINÉ
The Saint Satur school group is composed of two distinct buildings, which are situated in the countryside. The pre-primary school is made up of two classes which are ‘small section' together with ‘medium section' (PS / MS, from three to five years old), and another class with the ‘big section' (GS, five/six years old).
The elementary school has three classes : the first one (CP /CE1, six/eight years old ) 2 – (CE1/CE2, eight/ten years old ) 3 – (CM1/CM2, ten/twelve years old ).
English is taught by each teacher in his/her own class since September 2013. Four out of the five teachers are skilled. All of the teachers wish to participate in the Erasmus project in order to improve their teaching of english, but only three of them are voluntary to study abroad. The town of Saint Satur has limited cultural sites with very little cultural opportunities towards the exterieur unless travelling an important distance of approximately fifty kilometers. However, the town posesses numerous sports facilities like tennis, rugby, golf, minigolf and a swimming pool.
The social/professional environment is quite poor. This project has stimulated our pupils and to given them a dynamic interest in language especially.
Sports activities during school helped the children with their language barrier. English has already been taught in classes by means of repeating, in real context and through communication.
Through our different sports activities, we have learnt the different ways that activities are taught in England in comparison to those taught in France. For example, we have compared golf with cricket. (Golf course situated in Saint Satur where the 3rd cycle children -from eight to eleven years old- already practise on several occasions during the year). We have also compared how the pupils in England are taught, for example how to play rugby. (Rugby field situated in Saint Satur).
Several aims are present within a same sports activity :
oral production : the class group uses the english language during the activity
understanding and writing production : using words and orders in english
listening and oral comprehension : by pairs, each pupil can evaluate the oral production of his pair
knowledge of one's cultural heritage ( knowing the sports origin).
Aims :
To build a progression in sports, cut in sequences and then in sessions, using the english language, from Small Section (3-4 years old) to CM2 (11-12 years old)
To build an english-speaking sports culture : to discover cricket, base ball, rowing …, to think about comparisons between traditional games, and even to talk of the history of sports coming from the english-speaking countries (like tennis for example).
To build a sports culture from the english-speaking countries : to know the traditionnal annual celebrations (like Thanksgiving being the football national day), the typical anglo-saxon places (cricket field) and clothes (white clothes for cricket on Sundays).
The training in England allowed us to know the British culture, its educational system and life in Great Britain and collect photos and videos to show them to our partners when back in France.
The rugby school offers all the pupils a rugby cycle.
A rugby educator teaches during this cycle to each class.
Participants profile :
Two out of the five teachers have got a linguistic university training.
One out of the five teachers has got a linguistic baccalauréat (A level) training .
The three teachers who participated to the training wish to go further in their training of communication concerning the British language and the Anglo-saxon culture.
Description of the activities :
The main activities are about sports activities (EPS in French).
Thus, we have approached all the sports activities linked with the sports equipments we could have (tennis, rugby, golf and water activities) by comparing them with those practised in Great Britain, known or unknown in France (like cricket for example).
These sports activities have been our main activities during the school year. Moreover, we have completed them with other activities chosen among the missing sports disciplines : athletic, gymnastic, opposition and danse activities.
The three steps of the sports (EPS) sessions (warming, the activity on its own and relaxation) have been taught in English.
Impact :
The teachers have revived the oral English language so that they could reinforce their linguistic skills and have a thorough knowledge of the British educational system thanks to a daily impregnation.
