Jacques Beaumont School in Montendre is a French state school located in the country which caters for over 200 primary school children (aged between 6 and 11).
The town of Montendre and local organizations have already been involved in actions intended to give the town a more European dimension. The staff of the school has decided to pursue the actions in order to offer access to European culture to the local children. In a view to develop the pupils’ communication skills in real-life situations and to allow the teachers’ flexibility within the school, the staff have decided to enhance the use of DNL (non-linguistic subjects), i.e. other subjects such as PE, music and visual arts will be taught in English by different teachers, the same teacher being in charge of the same subject with the different age groups.
To reach this goal, it would be necessary for 4 primary school teachers of various ages and in charge of different age groups to take part in a two-week training course in Dublin in Ireland. The training would focus on teaching methods not only to teach English as a second language but also to teach other subjects in English. The training will provide the teachers with the skills required to start teaching the various subjects mentioned above as from September 2014. This project will be integrated to the school project. It will give the teachers an opportunity not only to swap classes with their colleagues according to the skills they have developed during their training but also to teach different subjects.
The impact of the training course will be made apparent through contributions in English to the school website as well as the development of projects through e-twinning. It is also hoped that the percentage of children reaching A1 in English at the end of primary school will go up to 90%. Finally, the impact will be visible through the organization by the town of local events such “tea times” or a Celtic festival at the end of the school year.
The team are hoping, thanks to the teachers and the schoolchildren, to reach the families and the area as a whole. In conclusion, the training should indirectly help the population of Montendre to be more open to Europe and more aware of their European identity.
