Several thousand hectares of woodland established in our region over the past 40 years exhibit very low biodiversity: a detailed programme of ecological research will monitor the diversity of wildlife in 24 woods the Transmanche region, and determine how biodiversity could be enriched, through supplementary planting and changes in management practices. To supply plant material for this purpose ' and indeed future planting ' a parallel investigation will establish how seed of trees, shrubs and herbs (including grassland species for woodland rides and glades) can be sourced locally, and plants produced locally. This will meet the needs of the horticultural and forestry industry and also the wider environmental needs of their clients: local authorities, farmers, landowners, highway planners, landscape architects and environmental organizations.
