Empad Clubhouse Training Courses for staff and members of italian Clubhouses

The promotion of the social inclusion and the labour market integration of people with mental health problems are common challenge for the whole Europe. The ongoing economic crisis had made this challenge even more current than before. People with mental illness are one of he most excluded groups In Europe and addressing this issue inevitably requires a European-level approach. This is one of the reason that motivate Progetto Itaca Palermo Voluntary Association to write this project proposal in partnership with other two Italian Associations, Progetto Itaca Roma and Progetto Itaca in Milan. The three Association share a common goal: to promote activities and projects of prevention, solidarity, support to people with mental illness and sustain to their family. A particularly relevant objective is the rehabilitation of people with mental illness, within the Club Itaca, a not residential place and without personal of health sector, inspired to Clubhouse model, now popular in more than 32 countries all over the world, thanks to the support of the ICCD (International Center for Clubhouses Development) and Clubhouse Europe. The Clubhouse is a community-based approach that complements available psychiatric treatment, where people who attend, are not patient and not simple users, but members, discovering and developing their potential through the collaboration with the staff in running the Clubhouse. Clubhouse model be ground on the idea that work and work relationship are part of the rehabilitation process and that recreational activities help to recovery. Staff and members training is necessary for rehabilitation activities and Club Itaca management and development. Every staff of a Clubhouse, according to International standards, has the mandate to participate to a specific training on Clubhouse method at the qualified European and international training base. Hence, participation to Erasmus + training and others inter-disciplinary activities, are relevant and coherent to Progetto Itaca Palermo and its partners objectives. Due to their background, education and training is essential to Clubhouse efficiency. Thanks to Erasmus + Program , during 2014 and 2015, the project “EMPAD Clubhouse Training Course for Staff and Members of Italian Clubhouses” will trainee staff and members of the partnership’s Clubhouses at 3 EMPAD courses, of 10 days each, respectively at Clubhaus Schwalbennest/ Clubhaus München Giesing (München, Germany), Clubhouse Fountain House (Stockholm, Sweden), Clubhouse De Waterheuvel, (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Clubhouse training courses introduce the Clubhouse method to professionals working in the field of mental health rehabilitation and adult education. Staff and members skills development and innovative methodology application, at European level, are essential to reach project objectives and results and to eradicate stigma and prejudices against people with mental illness. The planned activities are therefore relevant to the single participants and the organizations to which they belong too. On the one hand, the consortium and the European clubhouse network will provide training, strengthen international partnerships in the field of learning and education, and apply common methodologies. On the other hand, participants and stakeholders (members, staff, business partners, providers of health services, etc..) will be able to deepen and transmit knowledge and skills through their direct involvement in the Clubhouse and broad communication and awareness activities. The main results of Clubhouse training course are focused on structuring the work-ordered day, building egalitarian relationships between members and staff, as well as on the effectiveness of the "real" work functional to the management of the Clubhouse as a method of rehabilitation. EMPAD courses will also provide participants with new ideas and best practices to apply in their own environment. Another important goal is to extend the knowledge of the content and results of the EMPAD courses to a wider audience, including staff, social workers and other professionals who work in the field of mental health services, including service users themselves.
