Tallinn Lillekyla Secondary School is an innovative school that values learning, self-development, sports, integration of ICT tools into learning-teaching process, environmentally-friendly attitude and multiculturalism. Since 2003 our school has been involved in different integration projects and as a result of the process has developed into a multicultural school that introduces and appreciates multicultural values and where children and young people from more than 10 different nationalities/ countries learn. School pays a lot of attention to teaching natural sciences. Lately we have been an exemplary school in the field of ICT and media studies for many schools in Estonia and we have also shared our experience with many foreign schools. In our secondary school we have three study directions: realities-economy, humanitarian-media and sciences-recreation. In primary education we have classes focusing on sports, English, creativity, mathematics and music. Based on our school’s development plan and priorities the aims of our project are: -to acquire new teaching methods; - to increase the use of ICT tools in integration with different subjects and to develop media-conscious students; - to integrate more effectively new immigrant students into everyday school life and increase tolerance between students with different cultural background; - to increase international cooperation between teachers and students; - to turn learning process for students more interesting and contemporary; - to value sustainable development in education; - to increase possibilities to learn foreign languages. In the project participate 12 teachers out of 87 workers of the school. Teachers from all fields of education have been involved: elementary school, mathematics and sciences, mother tongue, foreign languages, arts, support services and extracurricular work. We have taken into consideration that the participants have different experience in teaching (teachers with a long teaching experience and the ones who have just worked for a few years). Teachers’ initiative, activity and readiness to contribute to school development was also taken into account. The activities of the project are staff mobilities in the following categories: - media studies and integrating social media into study process; - sustainable development and environmental education; - teaching methods of the 21st century; - educational systems elsewhere in Europe; - cross-curricular use of various ICT devices; - prevention of school drop-out and motivation of students to achieve better academic results different staff mobility courses help teachers to cope with the multicultural environment of our school. The project is run on the basis of a staff mobility calendar plan, which is taken as a basis to check registration to courses, aspects in travel management, adherence to deadlines and follow-up activities. Teamwork is a key feature for carrying out the project efficiently. The expected effect of staff mobility on the participants and organisation is the following: - New teaching methods are implemented. - ICT devices are used more efficiently in cross-curricular studies and students’ media awareness is shaped. - New immigrants are successfully integrated into study process and also into the school environment. Tolerance between students from different cultures will increase. - International project-based studying is used in teaching. - Various activities that value the environment and sustainable development are carried out in school and environmental topics are also integrated into different subjects. - Studying foreign languages will become more diverse and based on a target language’s culture. - School staff’s unity will increase. In the long run, the teacher’s mind will be broadened both culturally and pedagogically thus making the teacher more professional in his/her work. As a result studying will become more interesting, more actual and more modern for students, which in turn should motivate students to attend school and more actively participate in their education. The participation in the project supports directly the implication of our school’s vision and goal, which is that the student who studies in Tallinn Lillekyla Secondary School is a broad-minded, environmentally aware, successful in information society, co-operative, motivated and independent learner who values studying and self-realization.
