The EOI Girona has been working with new technologies and has always opted for training in the methodology of foreign languages using the Internet, the use of interactive whiteboards and the use of the learning platform Moodle, to name but a few. It is therefore essential for us to advance knowledge of new technologies in many different areas, both in the classroom and beyond.
Six teachers have participated in this project. From different departments: English, Russian and Italian; two of them are part of the management team and most have coordination responsibilities. All participants have conducted training of various kinds and have written a report about the course as well as a presentation of this for all the teachers so that the wholeeducational community can benefit from the knowledge acquired.
The activities are:
1. Using mobile technology in the classroom (Ipad, smartphone ...). CANTERBURY, UK.
2. IATEFL 2015 Annual International Conference. BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM.
3. Enhance Learning with iPads and Tablets. HELSINKI, FINLAND
4. Job Shadowing: The LIM nella didattica. Erice, Italy.
5. Course: Blended Learning for Adult Education Staff: Combining Online and Face-to-Face Learning. CAMBRIDGE, UNITED KINGDOM
6. Job shadowing. Observation whiteboards LONDON, UK.
The expected impact in the short and long term is to familiarize the educational community in the use of mobile technologies; share the latest developments in the field of 'flipped classrooms' and provide the necessary tools to motivate digital native students; help students and teachers while sharing ideas and materials, applications and programs. Assessment surveys carried out by the students and teachers of our center in the last two years reflect an improvement in the level of satisfaction in the use of new technologies.
Locally our students have more resources at hand and are better guided and directed. We will improve the management of blended learning courses creating exclusive teams of teachers of this modality, we will implement new teaching methods using new technologies and add them to the lesson plans and syllabi. Some of these activities have already taken place but many others will implemented during the 2016-2017 course.
To spread what they learned during the training, teachers have conducted briefings in different school sessions. Later the teams of different levels and languages have come together to implement the acquired knowledge and practices in their syllabi and / or Moodles . Nationally we have planned to share ideas and materials with other EOI (through participation in seminars or workshops) and open the possibility of sharing projects and materials to implement distance learning courses with Italian teachers from other countries. At a European level, we have presented the official language schools, its curriculum, methodology, organization and good work. We believe that the latter is very important because this type of school itself does not exist in the rest of Europe and our European partners are always surprised and want to deepend their knowledge about our schools and our performance.
The benefits are that the teacher is now better able to use technology in the classroom (virtual platforms, the use of Internet, Facebook, Twitter and other applications for mobiles and portable devices). All teachers and students will benefit as classroom dynamics are and will be more agile as students have more and better resources at hand. Whiteboards training and learning courses have had a more immediate benefit as they have been applied in the same year when the training took place. Blended learning courses will also improve its management and organization as from next academic year teachers will form a team and share materials, applications etc. which they will also share with the rest of the department. In the case of trainings on useful devices we are aware, however, that we still have to work in selecting applications we have learned as they are numerous and some are not free of charge, so further reflection is needed.
