PROJET
TERMINÉ
The present project will take place in the Colegio de Jesús school, which is based in Barajas, Madrid. The socioeconomic environment of the area is middle to low, although there are a significant number of parents with high expectations of success for their children. A bilingual project is being implemented in our school, having subjects solely taught in English. For the time being, the aforementioned project is activated in the first four courses of primary education and consequently follows such implementation in the forthcoming course, namely, in 5th course. Thus, in two years’ time the project will be in all primary courses with the aim of continuing in secondary education. One of the strongest parts of our project lies in the ICT promotion both from teaching and students’ learning perspectives. Our school has come to the conclusion that the current teaching methodologies are in need of updating to bring them up to speed with current educational practice. Cooperative learning is considered beneficial for many reasons, but is relevant to our bilingual school as it is particularly beneficial for second language acquisition, as cooperative learning activities promote peer interaction which helps the development of their ability to learn and language. The goals for the coming courses are explained as follows. Firstly, our aim is to educate our staff in the skills and techniques required to implement cooperative learning in their classrooms as a modern methodology in line with today´s educational standards. We are determined to provide the highest standards within our educational setting. Secondly, to gain bigger insights into the European dimension by trying to participate in international projects in such a way that the corresponding participants can become aware of other educational systems and practices which can be integrated to their own teaching life, improving their personal motivation and satisfaction. There will be some paramount activities to be carried out. On the one hand, a number of seminars will be given, based on new methodologies in cooperative learning on the grounds of experimental insights, making use of ICT (Information and communication technologies) tools for daily use at school. Every teacher will be able to follow a personalised educational programme which can be applied to his/her teaching practices. On the other hand, teachers will be observed in their classes. Following “job shadowing” and a teaching period abroad, experiences and practices on bilingualism are shared, as well as new methodologies and technological tools expecting future collaborations in European projects. The analysis of the project will revolve around qualitative data in the form of the students’ results in all subjects including any taught through the bilingual system, an increase in parental satisfaction with the new methodology which we will garner from the annual surveys, the increase of students who sit for the Cambridge examinations in order to get their corresponding diplomas, an improvement of the BEDA results as well as promotion of student exchange programmes which allow our students to spend some weeks abroad and also to guest foreign students who belong to the same programme, making European awareness more visible in our school. Also data regarding any change in the numbers for annual intake is very relevant, to form an impression of the communities awareness and the parents satisfaction with the changes implemented. This project is expected to have an impact on our schools which will be assessed in the following temporal terms: 1) the implementation of new methodologies and teaching innovative steps; 2) teachers’ professional and personal acquisition, and last but not least, 3) the use of resources and experiences from foreign professionals in the educational area. On a short term basis, the impact of this experience based on the results improvement will be assessed in the case of bilingual-oriented subjects (other than the English subject itself) and our student’s participation in international exchange students programmes. In addition, on a long term basis, it is expected that the bilingual programme is extended to all levels (namely, infant, primary and secondary education), which can be translated into a positive improvement of both students, teachers and families, striving for the excellence of teaching and learning standards of this school as one of the key goals. For our school this programme is a great opportunity and given that, we would like to state that we have been attending numerous seminars every year for the last decade with the aim of supporting the bilingual programme which was started four years ago. All in all, we are really happy to do our best so that this experience is fruitful for the school community, which will definitely represent a turning point in the bilingual development of our school.
