Educational and Training System for Clean Coal Technology

Climate change is, for sure, one of the most challenging issues of the century at international level. The European Union goals regarding energy security, environmental protection and economic growth will be achieved through a low-carbon economy in Europe, objectives clearly defined in the European Roadmap 2050. At the same time, the EU regional policy aims to reduce regional disparities in terms of income, wealth and opportunities. Promoting R&D activities via information, best practices and know-how transfer practices through innovation, knowledge economy and environmental protection are EU’s main targets. Following Lisbon Strategy, CleanCOALtech project proposal is based on the economic concepts of: Innovation as the motor for economic change; The "learning economy"; Social and environmental renewal. The main goal and objective of the project is to create and develop an educational and training system for promoting clean coal technologies through knowledge and best practices shared, in order to provide high performance and innovation in the educational process for vocational training and to raise stakeholders level of knowledge. The knowledge, best practices and lessons learned will be shared by countries technologically developed for countries interested in implementing clean coal technologies. CleanCOALtech project consortium was developed considering the European countries with history and expertise in using coal in power industry , interested in developing RDI activities for clean technologies. Clean coal technologies in the UK (with 35% coal fired power plants share out of the total power generation) will be analyzed and compared with those from Greece (56%) & Romania (40%) and know-how and best practices will be transferred from developed West EU to East EU countries. The project will be focused on the power industry. The knowledge sharing processes will be focused on innovative & emerging technologies such as: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), conventional power plants (PPs) with steam and supercritical parameters, reduction of mercury emissions; combined solutions for reduction of NOx & SOx emissions, pulverized coal fired power plants, co-combustion & fluidized bed (CFBC), integrated gasification combined cycle.Project outcomes: State of play report (occupational categories, competencies, technologies); Comparative study between project partner countries; Innovative education and training handbooks/guidance; Project website; Training sessions; Knowledge Sharing events; Projects results promotion. The “Special Eurobarometer 364 – Public Awareness and Acceptance of CO2 Capture and Storage” study shows that the level of knowledge, perception and awareness about climate change issues is low in Romania and Greece but that people’s desire is to learn more about these certain topics. This massive lack of information will be filled by those who can make a difference in the field of mitigating climate change issues within CleanCOALtech.
