Being a lead in adult education, MCAST aims to invest in and cater for the needs of the local labour force. MCAST strongly collaborates with the industry in order to develop skilled work force for the local economy.
At the moment, MCAST is offering a part-time course titled 'Basics of Fibre Optics '. This introductory course will allow learners at O’ level standard of education to gain an understanding of optical fibre cables and also the basics of fibre networks. Furthermore, in this course learners will also understand how to handle fibre optic cables appropriately and use suitable tools correctly and according to safety regulations. This course is aimed at people who have prior background in networking and would like to further their knowledge in the latest telecommunications technology.
MCAST is aware that Fibre Optics is the latest technology when it comes to Internet and Communications, for which training in such an area locally lacks. MCAST is determined to upskill the local labour force in this regard, even at a higher education level. Therefore the plan is that MCAST sends 2 people for further intensive training in Advanced Fibre Optics, in Sweden. Such training is to be designed and delivered by the Swedish partner. It is important to note that the Swedish partner is not new to MCAST. The Institute of ICT within MCAST had worked with this Swedish partner in the last years to develop a fully equipped laboratory on Campus, all equipment supplied by this company. This same company also delivered training to our lecturers - a total of 6 - on the subject last year.
However the needs has arisen that MCAST caters for a higher level and more advanced education and training in Fibre Optics. In fact, the immediate need for MCAST is that in the near future; MCAST will be designing a new course to be offered to the industry by next September to upskill the local labour force. The trained staff members will be assisting in the design of the new course which is aimed to be titled 'Advance Training on Fibre Optic Networks' and which would be accredited at MQF Level 5. Eventually they will also be delivering training within this course. In the longer term, MCAST will also be delivering this course as part of the full time courses, thus enabling normal MCAST students to choose this course and specialise in Fibre Optics. Each course would of course be offered to the international spectrum, in various ways; at the moment this skill and knowledge lacks across Souther Europe, and Malta can be very attractive for studying purposes. We also aim to offer this to our non European partners, such as North African countries with whom MCAST is increasing its relations.
Thus MCAST's needs are two folds; first addressing the urgent current need of the local labour force by upskilling the people already working in the sector, and second, providing the local economy with future work force. Through these 2 planned mobilities, MCAST will be investing in staff competences empowering them with new teaching methods and tools, and contributing to development of new curriculum responsive to the economical and social needs.
