Building our future; Youth empowerment from awareness and actionis a project to run a seminar for young people and adults and those in decision-makingpositions and responsible for policy-making that affects young people.The issues in particularthat affect young people which are being explored are those of sustainable development.The seminar and workshops and projects leading up to it are intended to encourage andenable young people's participation in democratic processes and in sustainabledevelopment issues.During the project young people and adults will: identify different ways that they can more from awareness of global challenges tolocal or global action. identify how they can take action to reorient national policies in favor of sustainabledevelopment. become aware of and take action on policies that affect them.Based on the interests and needs of participants three policy themes wil be chosen from thefollowing options:- Development Policies,- Education Policies,- Policies related to young people participation democracy (e.g. voting age)- Policies relating to trade, consumerism and the use of natural resources,- policies related to advertising standards and direct marketing at young peopleThe main activity in the project is a one-day seminar for young people, adult support workersand policy makers from sectors related to the selected policy themes. The seminar will bepreceeded by preparatory meetings and will call for young people to submit 'actions' thatthey have taken prior to the seminar and which will be displayed at the seminar. During theseminar young people (aged 16-18) who have been involved in the planning of the seminarwill present their own actions and relate how they relate to current policy.After the seminar participants can engage in action on a selected theme and will beencouraged to report back to ECO-UNESCO about their activities. The outcomes of theproject including notes, photographs and accounts of the seminar day will be compiled intoa short booklet about moving from awareness to action.
