eCME – European Electronic Continuing Medical Education

Continuing Medical Education is becoming more and more mandatory in Europe and is traditionally accomplished through the attendance by medical professionals of educational events, activities that often are time-consuming and costly. Thus the demand for online educational software and content is increasing. The eCME project wants to develop an online e-learning pilot, blended with hands-on medical courses, which will focus on two critical domains, those of clinical psychiatry and neuro-imaging in English and Greek language. This will be achieved with the deployment of ICT in order to develop an advanced, multi-lingual and secure e-learning platform through which CME can be carried out remotely across Europe. It will contain content of a wide variety of multimedia formats as there are video, speech, text, images, animations, slides, etc. and will take advantage of the increasing internet bandwidth availability across Europe. eCME will incorporate processes for the award of electronic CME-credits as an integral part if the service. In response to the increasing need for trans-European recognition of CME credits, eCME offers an initiative that can form the basis for the creation of a system for international exchange of CME credits. The project is directly targeted to the essential need for continuing vocational training of medical professionals in the healthcare sector. The key issue in the valorisation strategy is the intention of the partnership to exploit the eCME platform and plan a co-exploitation scenario with content providers (upload CME content) and/or national medical associations (gain credits from the online CME courses).
