Biedriba "Siguldas Alternativa izglitiba" (SAI) hosted 2 volunteers (age 25) from Romania and Portugal by implementing the long-term European Voluntary Service (EVS) project "EVS in Waldorf kindergarten of Sigulda 2” (Nr. 2014-3-LV02-KA105-000492) from 02.03.2015. until 02.05.2016. Project foreign partners (sending organizations) were American International School of Transylvania (Romania) and Casa da Horta, Associacao Cultural (Portugal). SAI is a public benefit organization in Latvia and its main activities are to provide alternative educational opportunities for children in its own department - Waldorf kindergarten of Sigulda, as well as to promote family education and healthy lifestyle. Thereby the project objective was to involve two young people in a meaningful and creative EVS in preschool educational institution and give them new life experience in foreign country, environment and society. All year round Alina Mohorea from Romania and Joao Cruz from Portugal were working with children and assisting to the kindergarten's staff and participating in everyday activities of kindergarten in order to get to know Latvia through rythm of Waldorf pedagogy. They were celebrating Latvian seasonal festivities, learning the languages and establishing new contacts, actively participating in different events organized by SAI - charity markets, cleaning activities, workshops, lectures and seminars about Waldorf pedagogy. As the main topic of this project was creativity and culture, volunteers were developing and realizing also their own ideas and initiatives by implementing non-formal education methods. There was a variety of events and photo exhibitions in the kindergarten, as well as outdoor trips organized by Alina and Joao. Together with children they learned to make different things from clay, wood and other natural materials. Alina and Joao organized also special events such as European Cultural Evenings with national presentations, songs and dances, tasting of Romanian and Portuguese national dishes, as well as colorful, joyful and family-friendly bike parade "SkirtBike Sigulda 2015". These events were attended by SAI members, kindergarten's families, youngsters from Creative Center of Sigulda, and other interested persons from local society. During the project time volunteers raised their self-esteem, improved language and communication skills, intercultural awareness, developed entrepreneurial initiative, as well as active participation in the society. With the support of project staff EVS volunteers were learning and evaluating their own learning competencies throughout the project. At the end of the project they both received Youthpass certificate and Recommendation Letter. The project has left the positive long-term impact on local society and project foreign partners.
