Dyslexia is a difficulty in the acquisition of fluent and accurate reading and writing skills that is neurological in origin.It is a lifelong difficulty, manifesting itself in early childhood through problems in learning to read and spell, and continues to affect those in vocational education where there is a need to not only read and write, but to take notes, to organise thoughts and ideas, to study, and participate in exams. The dyslexic individual has problems in all these areas. The DysVET Project was a response to the problem of low dyslexia awareness in mainstream education, vocational training and the open labour market.While many countries (UK) have had some form of support mechanism in place for many years, there was little available help to the dyslexic individual in the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Poland.The knowledge of dyslexia is limited almost exclusively to the interested parties themselves, their families and friends as well as dyslexia experts. DysVET wanted to challenge this by disseminating such knowledge amongst selected professional groups.The main aim of the project was to raise the level of dyslexia awareness among trainers, teachers, tutors in VET, managers, employers, Human Resources personnel. The consortium carried out needs analysis where inadequacy of knowledge was highlighted.Specific project objectives were:- Provision of reliable knowledge on dyslexia as well as physiological and educational consequences and the barriers faced by dyslexic individuals in accessing education and the labour market along with ways of eliminating them,- Developing an active attitude in teachers and managers supporting dyslexic individuals as regards access to knowledge and the labour market,- Equipping teachers, tutors and others who have a duty of care towards the dyslexic student with the ability to teach and support them successfully and efficiently,The purpose of this project was to implement in the Czech Republic, as well as in Bulgaria and Poland, a system already developed with European funding in other countries. This system was designed for trainers in the field of adult training and for high-level personnel in leadership positions as well as high and mid-level management. All of these are available in Czech, Bulgarian and Polish language.The project was led by Euroface Consulting s.r.o. - a company experienced in teacher training, and which has participated in two previous dyslexia related projects.The project outcomes were:- a European website for building a bridge between dyslexic trainees/workers and trainers, managers and employers;- e-books with pilot workshops on dyslexia for teachers and managers.
