Do it yourself in Education: expanding digital competence to foster students' agency and collaborative learning
Date du début: 1 janv. 2014,

DIYLab seeks to explore the change (and its educational effects) occurred in the last decade regarding digital competencies, specially the emergence of a culture of collaboration, connected to youth learning environments, technology and DIY. Young people's efforts to create and disseminate digital media have been associated with the growing do-it-yourself (DIY) movement. Starting in the '90s with arts, crafts, and new technologies, it is now prevalent in curriculum contents, giving educators and students the opportunity to create, share and learn in collaboration.DIYLab will implement the DIY philosophy in three primary and secondary schools and two universities. Each educational setting (primary, secondary and higher education) will develop (in collaboration with administrators and teachers) and implement a DIY Lab, in which the students will use current ICT (either available in the schools or brought in by the students) to create cross-curriculum DIY digital objects, which will then be shared publicly online in the DIYLab Hub. These digital objects will be designed in collaboration by students and teachers and they will be tailored to their educational contexts and curriculum.DIYLab will directly impact the educational practice of five different institutions and it will reach:* 120 5th grade students and 9 teachers (in 3 primary schools)* 120 9th grade and 27 teachers (in 3 secondary schools)* 150 university students and 20 professors (in 2 universities - 2 Faculties of Education and 1 Faculty of Fine Arts)The project will also carry out a socio-economic evaluation of the costs associated to the implementation of DIYLabs in primary, secondary and higher education, will disseminate the results of the implementation in academic papers and attending conferences, and will exploit these results in workshops and seminars to expand the impact of the project to more teachers, schools and universities.
