PROJET
TERMINÉ
The rationale of Discover Two Cities -project is to promote the usage of mobile devices and mobile learning in education. All teachers in all countries face the situation in which they compete to certain level with the entertainment provided by smart phones, tablets etc. The new so called diginative generation might find traditional education outdated or even boring. Instead of banning the new devices during lessons, our plan is to use them as a tool in education. Our aim is to make new technology a natural part of everyday education in schools. This project will not only include mobile learning, but also authentic learning, in which teaching is taken outside of the classroom into the "real world". The aim is to make learning more attractive by the use of mobile devices and interesting environment. The need of ICT and mobile techology in education is also clearly stated in in Education and training 2020 Key competences. Mobile learning is a new and innovative approach to education that has great potential.
In Discover Two Cities -project the two schools will start a mobile learning project. The idea is to develop learning activities on mobile devices (tablets). Activities will be built on free or low cost apps. The learning activities will help anyone using the tool to learn more about history, culture and future plans for city expansion. Tools will be freely available for other schools or even to the general public after the project is completed.
As this is an innovative project including new teaching methods, teachers will need some in-service training. This will be provided by Helsinki City Media Centre, the same organization which is responsible for ICT in-service training for teachers in Helsinki City.
Students will be in a central role in the process. They are not mere recipients, but an essential part of the learning process. They will be in charge of creating different learning activities, thus their sense of initiative and entrepreneurship will be raised. Cultural awareness is raised, as the learning activities will focus on history, architecture and art.
As students will work and finally compete in international teams exploring two European capitals, their creativity, innovation and risk-taking skills will be at test. This way we shall take learning outside the classroom, into the actual city and learn about the past, present and future of these cities. As teamwork will be conducted in English, a foreign language for all participants, their language skills will certainly be improved during the process. This entire means that the students will be learning to learn. Their ability to pursue and organize one's own learning in groups will be improved.
The intellectual outcomes of the project will be open to all. After the project we shall report it and disseminate all we have learned as widely as possible using e.g. eTwinning portal, different digital platforms and social media. We believe that examples like this will encourage many other teachers of various subjects to use innovative ICT -based methods in their teaching.
