Absenteeism from school is undesired student behavior which could be caused by many physical and social reasons and which is considered to affect student’s academic success in a negative way. (Altınkurt, 2008).
According to the research made, the ages of the students who are absent from school in the year 2012-2013 change between 13-18. It has been determined that the families of most of the students who are absent from school have low levels of education.
The research findings show that the factors such as the way how the lesson programs prepared at school level, the fact that the topics aren’t interesting, the schools’ opening and closing hours aren’t suitable have significant role in absenteeism of students from schools.
Again according to the findings of the research, among the factors affecting the school drops, causes related to school (grade repetition, failure, absenteeism), personal reasons (different school preference, marriage, girl-boy relations), financial situation (working at a different sector except for school), friend affect (bad habit) and attitude towards school (teachers, lessons, not liking school) play important roles.
Among the factors causing school drops, ‘absenteeism’ has a significant place. According to the research results some students think that it will be useful that the rules are applied in fairly, the schools are safer, more positive relation appear between teachers and students. Moreover students have determined as problems that in their current schools that the number of teachers was insufficient and the lessons went without teachers.
It is quite important that teachers and the managers who have key role in preventing absenteeism and school drops will contribute to the solution of the problem. While the teachers’ in class positive attitude and behaviors have positive effect dependence on the school, the authoritarian attitude, lack of communication with students, expecting more performance than the students’ skills can cause absenteeism. Moreover, the fact that the students have to work out of the school, the problems they have met due to their psychological disturbances, obstacles, insufficient motivation, not being able to focus and thus not liking the school and the fear of future and many similar factors can cause absenteeism.
The social, cultural and economic structures of the families play an important role in school drops. It is seen that there is a serious divergence among manager and teachers. While the managers and teachers express that the family’s situation plays an important role in the school drops of students, the students relate this indirectly to families. Hopelessness and giving up education are seen as principal reasons in school drops more than the financial situations of the family.
Our goals: we aim to reduce the absenteeism by examining the samples and application methods in Europe by job-shadowing in the country of our partner on ‘Reducing the school drops’ in preventing school drops, to generate new methods and techniques, besides lessons, to raise awareness in the unconscious families who are unconscious have a direct relation with school drops, to implement facilities especially social, cultural artistic and sports fields. Moreover, among our goals are enable our teachers gain personal development, occupational knowledge and skills, increase the efficiencies in this field and these to be used in our country and region, to strengthen the cooperation with the institutes and organizations in European countries, to increase our school to European countries, to encourage foreign language acquisition by enabling cultural interaction.
Our mobility will be done on date 26.01.2016/05.02.2016 with 10 teachers and 1 manager in Holland for 12 days.
Documents such as video, photos, hand brochures will be shared in the meetings which will be done by sharing experiences. On the webpage of our school and in the groups which we will form on social media all the events and documents related to our project will be shared.
The activities all the teachers participating at the end of the activities did at school, the experiences and skills they gained, brochures about the competences these activities have caused will be prepared and will be delivered to all schools in the district. The videos and pictures related to the topic taken during the activities will be delivered in DVD with the District Directorate of National Education.
