Development of Regional Interdisciplinary Mechatronic Studies

The DRIMS project is focused on achieving convergence of WBC’s higher education with EU developments deriving from the Lisbon agenda and the Bologna process through Development of Regional Interdisciplinary Mechatronics Studies - DRIMS. The Western Balkan Countries, including Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro, are facing a lot of problems concerning the higher education in engineering, which can be identified as follows:1) low responsiveness of the engineering studies to the changing market needs, 2) limited availability of interdisciplinary studies, 3) lack of regional educational cooperation that makes educational fragmentation,4) incomplete convergence with EHEA due to limited mobility and not implemented degree recognition system, 5) outdated educational centres with obsolete equipment, 6) limited availability of Life Long Learning (LLL) programmes, 7) lack of strong sustainable links with industry. As a result of the problem analysis in Partner Countries (PC), the DRIMS project intention is: (i) to develop regional interdisciplinary Bachelor and Master studies in Mechatronics, focusing on 3 cycle structure, ECTS and degree recognition, with regard to Bologna process and with relevance to industry needs. (ii) to update existing and build new capacities concerning equipment, teaching materials, teaching methods and teaching staff in order to achieve quality and relevance of the curricula. (iii) to create an education and industry networks in order to obtain sustainable system for international and industryeducation cooperation. (iv) to develop life-long learning (LLL) courses for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the WBC region, in order to contribute to increasing the industry competitiveness.Target groups of the DRIMS project are PC universities which will implement the new Bachelor and Master studies, academic staff and students from the PC universities, and professionals from SMEs in WBC region. Positive effects and changes will affect the academic staff and the student population. Local enterprises can also be considered as stakeholders since they are given the opportunity for employment of skilled engineers and opportunity for training of their employees through LLL programmes.
