Developing European Language Portfolio for the Deaf

The main objective of the Deaf Port project is to develop a multilingual EuropeanLanguage Portfolio for the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired (16+) and Europass LanguagePassport with a view to:a) enhancing their motivation to develop, extend and diversify their languageskills;b) helping them to reflect on their objectives, ways of and success in languagelearning;c) developing their capacity for independent learning;d) addressing learning needs in the most comprehensive way, providing suitableformat and adaptation of descriptions;e) introducing commonly recognized standards and ensuring transparency andcoherence in language learningThe Deaf Port model of the European Language Portfolio will address the languagelearning needs of the deaf and hearing-impaired, and will put language teaching andlearning of the target group in the context of common European standards, in order to:1) provide transparent and reliable information on language skills andcompetences of the learners2) keep records of achievements in their language learning3) maintain their motivation for language learning4) plan their learning strategy5) enhance their plurilingual and intercultural experienceThe project main beneficiary will be deaf and hearing-impaired learners of foreignlanguages. As the Deaf Port will help direct the process of acquisition of languagecompetence and to introduce a basis for assessment of their language skills, it will alsobe a useful tool, that will help language teachers.The outcomes will be:a) European Language Portfolio for the deaf and hearing-impaired in paper andelectronic format including: Language Passport, Language Biography andDossier in BG, CZ, DE, EL, EN, LV, RO.b) Deaf Port Teacher’s Guide in paper and electronic format in BG, CZ, DE, EL,EN, LV, RO.c) Deaf Port User’s Guide in paper and electronic format in BG, CZ, DE, EL, EN,LV, RO.d) Deaf Port Europass Language Passport in paper and electronic format in BG,CZ, DE, EL, EN, LV, RO.e) Language descriptors and self-assessment grids/checklists for deaf andhearing-impaired in BG, CZ, DE, EL, EN, LV, RO.f) Deaf Port Project website and workspaceg) Analysis of needs, constraints, practices and challenges to the deaf andhearing-impaired learners of languages to help developersh) Dissemination and implementation/exploitation of results.
