Developing Cultural Aspects and Methods of Teaching French
Date du début: 1 juil. 2014, Date de fin: 30 juin 2015 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Our school offers teaching in many foreign languages and many students apply to our school because they want to study one of the foreign languages offered. On the one hand, the aim of this project is to contribute to the growth of our foreign language staff competence in that the European dimension and the target culture, namely the French culture in this case, would receive more emphasis in class. Both the Finnish National Core Curriculum of Basic Education (2004) and the core curriculum of basic education of Nurmijärvi municipality emphasize the importance of culture in foreign language teaching. According to the latter, one of the aims of foreign language teaching is to provide the student with a considerable cultural capital (page 57). This is the basic need behind launching this project; in order to learn a language, the pupils should learn aspects of the target culture as well to be able to understand and properly use the language in its natural context. On the other hand, this project has a more general aim of updating methods and approaches used in foreign language teaching. The only active participant in this project is the English and French teacher of Isoniittu's school, Mr Sakari Juntura. The realisation of the project would entail participation in a language course intended for teachers of French in July, 2014. The course would include both aspects of culture and teaching methods, as most of the courses available do. Having participated in the course and acquired new skills and abilities, the participant would subsequently share the new ideas and approaches introduced in the course with his colleagues. The desired results are developing the awareness of cultural similarities and differences between the Finnish culture and that of France, for example, and contributing to the international and European atmosphere in our school. Moreover, the development and updating of foreign language teaching methods would increase the cultural knowledge and motivation of both the staff and the pupils. This would lead to a more motivating and productive learning and working environment and results.
