The project is directed to the Central Baltic Programme, priority 3: attractive and dynamic societies. For developing the Central Baltic countries, namely Estonia, Latvia and Finland, into attractive and dynamic societies for its citizens our project concentrates on the development of the sports sector in the region aiming for both positive social (improved health of citizens and athletes, improved sports education system) as well as economic (increased sports tourism) effects. The activities of the project contribute to the creation of a better living environment by providing the inhabitants of the programme area with high quality sporting possibilities and sports education, state-of-art sports rehabilitation possibilities and economic gains as well as feeling of togetherness from increased sports tourism (hosting major sports events). However, there are problems in developing the sports sector in the Central Baltic region. The common problem areas that the project addresses are: 1) Insufficient quality of sports education programmes and qualifications of staff in the sports sector. 2) Unsolved question of dual careers. 3) Lack of cooperation between sports organisations and with universities in tackling common problems in the Central Baltic region together. 4) Weak competitive position of Estonia and Latvia in worlds sports economy. Objectives to be achieved during the project are: 1. Improved quality of sports education programmes and qualifications of staff in the sports sector in the programme area. 2. Improved cooperation between sports organisations and with universities for solving common problems in the programme area. 3. A dual career programme for young athletes combining sport training and general education developed in order to prepare them for successful new career after career in sports. 4. Enhanced competitive position of Estonia, Latvia and Finland in worlds sports economy. To reach these objectives the following activities (divided into WP-s) are planned: WP1 Project management and coordination WP2 Developing international training centres into each partner country WP3 Improving sports rehabilitation systems in Estonia, Latvia and Finland WP4 Developing "dual career" programme for young athletes to prepare them for successful new career after career in sports WP5 Enhancing the competitive position and representation of Estonian, Latvian and Finnish sports organisations in international sports organisations. The activities are divided into WP-s according to objectives. Each WP has a different theme and target to be achieved during the project. All the WP-s together contribute to the development of the sports sector in the region by concentrating on the shortcomings that the partners have recognized. Achievements: SPORTSSOCIETY enhanced the competence of staff in the sports sector (LV, EE, FI). At the same time the project strengthened the networks and co-operation between the partner organisations. It also promoted the contacts between young athletes in the partcipating regions in a concrete manner. Furthermore, the project improved the capacity of the partner organisations to arrange bigger sports events. SPORTSSOCIETY organised a series of training events for coaches. At the events, different training and education methods were presented at joint workshops and practical trainings of athletes. A network of sports medicine specialists was established in order to improve sports-based rehabilitation systems. In addition, a dual career programme for young athletes was developed, Finally, the representation of Estonian, Latvian and Finnish sports organisations at international sports organisations was enhanced.
