Background: Natural resources and environment is rapidly destroyed and consumed by the human beings in an unconscious way. The results of such unplanned and careless consumption are reverted to human beings with such indicators as global warming, seasonal changes, diseases, drought, natural disasters and hunger. It is observed that environmental pollution throughout world is increasing day by day in parallel with the population growth rate and development of industry. Especially the young people play active role in raising awareness as the most dynamic force of society. This is also necessary for them, too. Participation in projects, campaigns and activities on nature and environment by the youth will not only improve their awareness, increase their self-confidence and provide them with the opportunity to discover their potentials but also make great contributions for protection of the environment. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT: The objective of our project is to include participatory youth in various environmental activities in order to contribute establishment of environmental conscious; to make them volunteer to take place and assume responsibility in social responsibility projects; to support their linguistic and individual development; to increase their social awareness and to contribute protection of the environment. Number and Profile of the Participants The participants will be chosen among the young people who are between the age of 18 and 25 studying at the university. Priority will be given to the children from low income families while choosing the participants. There will be 30 participants in total. Description of the Activities and Methodology to be used in implementation of the project: The activities will start with an acquaintance meeting and evaluation of the activities will proceed with establishment of project coordination unit and project monitoring unit. Then, the participants will tour in the city with masks on their mouths wearing t-shirts of institutional recognition and covered with project slogans in order to draw attraction to air pollution. "Get off the car ride on the bike campaign" will be organized using various foreign currency containing project slogans in order to draw attraction to the damages of fossil fuel; and the participants will make a bicycle tour within the scope of this campaign. The participants will walk around the city wearing t-shirts and using foreign currencies containing project slogans within the scope of "Don't litter, don't fade my sun" campaign; and collect the wastes dropped by the people and put them into the waste bin. Interviews will be made with the public on streets and parks about environment and nature. Animal shelters will be visited, street animals will be fed at the streets. The participants will clean the coast and the parks. TEMA Foundation, Directorate of Parks and Gardens and Directorate of Environment and Cleaning Affairs of Maltepe Municipality will be visited in line with the formerly got appointments in order get information regarding the studies about the subject matter. Transportation Department of the Municipality and Traffic Division of Provincial Security Directorate will be visited in order to make application for inspection of the vehicles honking unnecessarily and causing noise pollution. Workshops will be conducted in order make tools from waste material. Within this scope; following activities will be conducted: • Gift boxes and ribbons will be made from waste paper • Kites will be made from waste material • Sugar bowls will be made from plastic bottles • Money boxes will be made from plastic bottles • Picture frames will be made from waste jars. From time to time entertaining programs and warming sports will be organized in order to increase motivation of the participants, to enjoy them, to improve their healthy life habits and to contribute to their social integration. The activities will be completed upon writing the final report and distributing the certificates. Brief Description of the results and the foreseen impact: • Cultural, linguistic and individual development of the participants will be improved. • Self confidence and motivation of the participants will be improved. • Contribution will be made to improve team spirit. • Contribution will be made to socialization of the participants, and their participatory and leadership skills will be improved. • Environmental conscious of the participants will be raised. Long term benefits: o Our project will improve visibility, quality and capacity of the Youth Programs. o Our Project will make contribution to the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and those of Kyoto Protocol.
