DARAJA: through volunteer hands!

DARAJA: through volunteer hands! is a Group EVS project covering 2 volunteers from Portugal going to Kenya to support NGO´s working in the field of Human Rights Education (HRE).The venue and all EVS Activity will take place in Nairobi slums (Kibera and Soweto) where during 12 months (2nd April 2012 - 1th April 2013) the 2 volunteers will be involved in different tasks focused on the EMPOWERMENT of young people with fewer opportunities and local COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.Main objectives: SUPPORTING NGO´s work in the field of HRE within the scope of voluntary service; DEVELOPING critical thinking and sense of responsibility concerning the living in society and contribute to social inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities; ENCOURAGING community development and inclusive growth through the empowerment of youth leaders to implement non-formal education (NFE) activities; INCREASING attitudes of understanding and interest for cultural diversity by fostering intercultural dialogue; STRENGTHENING the role of youth spreading humanitarian values through peace building and conflict resolution.Main implemented activities: media/communication (online newsletter, blog, website management); support staff members in forums/community meetings with groups of women and young people, mainly developing NFE activities and HRE; support in the implementation and management of income generating activities; support children in their school homework; Portuguese language classes; developing arts and crafts activities, group dynamics.Methods: learning by doing, intercultural dialogue, active listening, reflection and cooperation, energizers and ice-breakers, brainstormings, theatre, films, arts and crafts, exhibitions, sports and outdoor activities. Volunteers will introduce COMPASS (Manual for HRE with young people) to promote NFE with children, youngsters and women.
