PROJET
TERMINÉ
The project of Primary School M. Choceňského "Further Training of Foreign Language Teachers" was founded in 2014. The main objectives of the project were to promote education of foreign language teachers, introduce new methods in language teaching and launch cooperation of teachers within the school. The development of language skills as well as key competences of pupils requires that teachers know and are able to use a large variety of modern teaching techniques. After several years of work with children, naturally comes the need to fundamentally replenish and restore this reservoir of methods and ideas. The teachers must learn themselves, to improve in their profession and to remain good teachers. In the Czech Republic, however, there is not a wide choice of intensive language-methodological courses for foreign language teachers that last at least 12 days, so we welcomed the possibility of financial support from Erasmus + KA1 to participate in structured courses abroad. Methodical training of foreign languages teachers in the foreign language environment is considered to be very beneficial - teachers gain new teaching ideas and also improve their own language skills. The need for innovation also resulted from the necessity to adapt the curriculum for the teaching of foreign languages in order to better meet our goals - we want to make the learning process enjoyable for the students and to enable them to use foreign languages to communicate actively. At the same time, we felt the need to improve the climate in the staff room and to start to share ideas and collaborate more. Among foreign language teachers there are also several new colleagues that we could support thanks to the project- whether in the form of participation in the teachers´ clubs, open lessons, or through mentoring.
Three foreign language teachers attended intensive language-methodical courses abroad. The courses were selected to cover a focus on the methodology of teaching English at primary, respectively secondary level and also teaching the German language, which is taught as a second foreign language at our school. Mgr. Jana Slováková chose the course "English in the Primary Classroom" with focus on the methodology of teaching English to the first grade pupils. The course was held in Brighton, UK (School The English Language Centre, Brighton-Hove). Mgr. Pavlina Hrabětová focused on teaching English to teenagers, the course "Creative Methodology for Teachers" was held in Exeter, UK (School of International Projects Centre Ltd, Exeter). German language teacher, Mgr. Martin Klusoň, attended a language-methodological course "Auffrischungskurs für Deutschlehrer: Methoden und Sprache" in Regensburg, Germany (School Horizonte - Institut für Sprache, Kommunikation und Kultur Regensburg). All three courses lasted for 12 days, with a range of at least 30 lessons per week.
After returning from the mobility, participants together created a brochure of new ideas for teaching languages. During methodology sessions (teachers´clubs), they presented the methodological guide to other colleagues, prepared some open teaching units and also provided on-demand support by mentoring other teachers of foreign languages in school. These activities helped us to connect foreign language teachers at our school and allowed us to create a better atmosphere for cooperation and sharing ideas and establish safe ways of support for new colleagues. Together, we made some changes in the curriculum for the teaching of English and other foreign languages. We also changed educational materials for language learning - students learn in a more entertaining way now and they develop all language skills equally. We use more of advanced technology, cooperate in projects with foreign partners. We use online resources, and as a team, we create additional teaching materials. The potential for further improvement can be seen in further strengthening of cooperation with foreign partners.
This educational project has helped us innovate the process of teaching foreign languages and to improve the working climate in our school due to the strengthening of teachers´ cooperation. Our next plan is to try job-shadowing in another school abroad and some teachers of non-language subjects are planning a course on CLIL.
