The CULTRAIL is a series of cultural and multimedia events, which’s aim is to strengthen the cultural identity of the twin cities Subotica and Szeged and to develop the neighborly connections between the inhabitants of the border-land. The programs are building upon the common historical, cultural and economical traditions of the region. Beside the introduction of these, the purpose is to introduce the contemporary art’s ambitions and artists of the region. The common issue of the several programs is the journey by rail. The art relic rail coach which is still running between the two cities turns to a festival location, where the clientele could meet with the representatives of the contemporary Serbian and Hungarian literature and the musical and theatrical life. 1st Event: March, 2013: Kosztolányi-enigma. Literature quiz for high school students of Vojvodina and Szeged in the framework of the Kosztolányi Days in the Subotica City Library. 2nd Event: May 2013: KIŠobran/KIŠernyő Subotica City Library. Two day long bilingual scientific conference about the works of the Subotica born writer Danilo Kiš. 3rd Event: October 2013: Rail Coach Festival between Szeged and Subotica. Literature festival in the railway stations of Szeged and Subotica and on the rail coach, with the participation of Serbian and Hungarian writers. 4th event: February 2014, Csáth symposion. Scientific conference about the works of Géza Csáth, and also readings will be held in Palic. The closing event of CULTRAIL will be the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition about the events of the project in the Subotica City Library Achievements: CULTRAIL was a series of cultural and multimedia events, the aim of which was to strengthen the cultural identity of the twinned towns of Subotica and Szeged and to develop neighbourly connections between the inhabitants of the border region. The common theme of the programmes was travelling by train. Reading of excerpts from literary works, performances, concerts on non-traditional and ad-hoc stages, on train platforms and in trains, at order-crossings and on the streets and in the markets of the towns, attracted hundreds of interested people, affirming and promoting the body of literature in the neighbouring country. Literature and art were thus integrated into everyday life. To attract and engage the youth, the partners organised a literature quiz for high school students from Vojvodina and Szeged as part of the Kosztolányi Days event in the City Library of Subotica, titled “Kosztolányi-enigma”. The students were familiarised with the work of this writer by visiting the places described in one of his novels. Furthermore, they organised a conference in Paliv about the works of Géza Csáth.In Subotica, a two-day-long bilingual conference, "KIŠobran/KIŠernyo", gathered writers, young aspiring artists, experts and book-lovers not only from the border-region but from elsewhere in both countries and abroad. As part of the “KIŠobran/KIšernyo" conference, the publication Timetable: Travelling Means to Live” containing texts and contributions by writers and literary critics, was published. Emphasis on the architectural heritage of contemporary and historic train stations in the region is a special feature of this book. The third programme was the Rail Coach Festival between Szeged and Subotica with the participation of Serbian and Hungarian writers and an audience of book-lovers. Contributions by writers and artists from this travelling festival were published in a special edition of the magazine “Symposion”. The multifaceted and vibrant gatherings deepened the relationship between not only Szeged and Subotica as twinned cities, but also between the literati from both countries. Intense intercultural cooperation diversified the network of organisations and book lovers, introduced novel methods into the literature and art education of the youth and promoted traditional and contemporary artworks. The project partners expect long-term results from this project in the fields of education, scientific research and contemporary art.
