We are in the second decade of the 21st century and in a time of great change, both in terms of how we learn and how we work. New and powerful technologies are changing the ways we learn and interact and engage with each other. These technologies, along with the increasing mobility of workers and industries, are also impacting on work practices and patterns. We have to provide an education that is relevant not just in static and local contexts – but in 21st century and international contexts. In our school we have pupils from over twenty different countries, as well as pupils from the indigenous travelling community. Even though there is a programme in place to assist pupils in transferring to post-primary schools some pupils drop out of the educational system before the age of sixteen and others leave with low educational attainments. While we have already put in place programmes to assist in raising pupil attainment in numeracy and literacy, we also believe that by giving pupils new experiences, by broadening their horizons, and by raising their expectations that we can also motivate them to become better learners. For these reasons we feel that engaging with European schools would create new learning contexts and raise long-term expectations of pupils. We want our pupils to have the knowledge, confidence, competences, citizenship and life skills so that they can participate in, and contribute to globalised societies and workplaces. We want our teachers to be adaptive, innovative, creative and receptive to new practices and methodologies. Our project involves three teachers attending two training courses with the objectives of learning more about culture and citizenship, and collaborative project based activities. We want to develop our understanding of cultural diversity and cultural heritage, so that we might harness these diversities to enhance the ideals of global citizenship within our school community, while at the same time raising the international status of our school. We believe that by embedding the ethos of Europe and citizenship in our school, and by using more collaborative project based work we will engage the pupils more actively in school and local activities. Through this active participation they will achieve success and develop competences and life skills that will serve them well into the future. We believe that participation in Erasmus+ actions will be critical in moving our school forward.
