Crisis - what crisis?

The partnership linked four state secondary schools and a school for the disabled (deaf/hard of hearing) from four countries. Teachers and pupils have worked together on the theme "Crisis - what crisis?" Year one had the subtitle "Does money make the world go round?", thus directly referring to the current global financial crisis that has hit each of the participating countries. Year two concentrated on the question if or how economic and ecological interests can be reconciled: E + E = E (Economy + Ecology = Existence) and if the combination of economic and ecological considerations can be established as a common European concept or value: E + E = E (Economy + Ecology = Europe?). On this basis the students worked on different aspects of the question how life in the future, in the year 2050, might look like.During the lifespan of the project the students worked in internationally mixed workshops; each workshop contained students from all the participating schools. They exchanged their ideas using e-mail and Facebook. Several times meetings took place to plan, to accompany and to evaluate the project. To lead and support the project, there were several meetings with the teachers / workshop leaders. These meetings served both as preparation for the main conferences and the evaluation afterwards. Also the headteachers met on several occasions, mostly to deal with the organizational issues. The teachers were also given the opportunity to immerse themselves in the teaching of another country through teacher exchanges. The highlights were two main conferences in Hattingen in 2011 and in Brugges in 2012, the so-called ROTA weeks (ROTA is the name for the long-term cooperation of the participating schools). During these weeks the students continued and finalized their workshop projects. At the end of these weeks they presented their results to the public during a closing ceremony at school. They also participated in other programmes such as daily language courses.
