Our aim is to accommodate two European Volunteers (EV) from different countries. Beside the work in the respective placements, we actively encourage and support the planning and execution of individual projects and ideas. The EVS objective of the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training (ET 2020) is thereby fulfilled. The EV not only develop additional language skills but also learn to plan and execute projects. This in turn will facilitate the entrance into the job market later on. The EVS objective of the European cooperation in the youth field is reached as well. The disadvantaged children of the municipal children’s home are purposefully involved to bring Europe close to them. This occurs in the children‘s daily contact with the EV who introduces them to their native country, identity and cultural background as well as in small projects of the EV. The placement in the mobile and international youth work of the JUKUZ provides an important contribution to sport. Basketball and football projects are initiated in which the EV not only participates in but also actively helps to shape them. As these measures are particularly made available to disadvantaged youngsters the EU objectives of developing the European dimension in sport and youth strategy are reached. In the self-conception of the JUKUZ „tolerance, freedom from violence, openness, plurality … those ideals are the goals and benchmark for our work. We want to live according to these ideals and to motivate other people through our work to do the same“ are mentioned. Democratic processes, co-management, equality and pluralism are initiated and implemented in the projects of the JUKUZ and the municipal children’s home. Thereby the EU objective of the promotion of European values in accordance with Article 2 of the Treaty on European Unity is put into practice. Two volunteers, their profiles and description of activities: The 22 year old Russian volunteer is from the city of Woronesh. She will support a group of teenage boys aged 12 – 17 in the municipal children’s home. The EVS entails the participation in family life (e.g. lunch and supper, help with homework, leisure time) as well as activities outside the municipal children’s home (sport, festivities, holiday camp). The aim is that through small projects the EV introduces the children to her native country and its culture. The intercultural exchange and mutual learning are fostered. The 23 year old Turkish volunteer is from the city of Mersin and will support the JUKUZ which provides communal youth work in Aschaffenburg. The EV actively participates in projects of the mobile and international youth work of the JUKUZ. She will have the opportunity to help shape the sport events, holiday games in the adventure playground, workcamps and youth exchanges. The aim is for the volunteer to initiate her own projects and thereby giving the target group an insight into her live and the culture of her native country. The EV work 30 hours per week in their respective placements. In addition, 8 hours per week are set aside for creative time and language acquisition. The creative time is used by the EV to develop and execute their own ideas and projects. At least one individual and one collective project are to be conducted during their EVS. Every 4-6 weeks a meeting is taking place with the tutors and coordinators who monitor the process and progress of the projects. Method of project implementation: Fixed components are regular meetings and project visits. 1. Welcome meeting shortly after arrival (EV, tutor, instructor, coordinators): reception, practical details, transparency about responsibility etc.) 2. Up to 2 project visits in the institution (EV, instructor, coordinators): retrospective and future view of the volunteer’s service, agreement of goals and monitoring of progress respectively, Youth Pass monitoring, learning results achieved so far 3. Final talk (EV, instructor, coordinators): reflexion, learning results, project results, publications, final report, Youth Pass, leave-taking. Targeted results are the strengthening of the volunteer’s personality and additional occupational qualification. Different media are used for visualisation to make the EVS accessible to a broad audience: reports in the local press, youth magazine, local magazine, websites of the partners, blogs, Cafe I, Youtube video or radio reports. The effect and the expected long-term benefit is the volunteer’s entrance into the job market after her EVS, integration of disadvantaged teenagers with the help of sport projects, reduction of prejudices and racism, participation of children and youngsters with the help of democratic processes and co-management. Another long-term benefit is the strengthening of the cooperation between all participating partners which promotes cooperation in the future.
