Creative Methodology in English as a Second Language
Date du début: 1 juin 2014, Date de fin: 31 mai 2015 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The background of this project is the increased amount of immigrants that are found in our classrooms. We are faced with the challenge of meeting every student at his or her level, and this is truly a challenge when it comes to teaching English as a Second Language since the prerequisites differs greatly between students with different cultural backgrounds. We can see a trend of young people failing the ESL subject, and we are very worried by this trend - what impact will this have on their futures given teh fact that English is such an important language in our time? We want for our ESL teachers to find new ways to teach in order to reach not only the students that have a solid ESL background but also those that, at a much faster pace, are struggling to learn English. We believe that a larger network is necessary in order for this to happen, and when taking courses abroad they will get the opportunity to connect to other ESL teachers from other countries and thus be able to build that kind of network. The three ESL teachers that are participating in this project have taught for between 5 and 12 years and are thus quite experienced. They are all interested in developing their teaching in order to be able to get as many students as possible to find ways to get as far as possible in their language studies, no matter where they come from or who they are. One of the ESL teachers is very interested in the research made at Harvard and is trying to implement those ideas in our school. We see that this is a great opportunity to continue with the work of getting students more involved in their own learning process. The two courses that we want for our ESL teachers to participate in matches these objectives. One course is on Creative Methodology and it is a course that focuses on new ways to approach teaching and also a chance to try these techniques. We believe that this is important to every teacher to keep up with, and we hope that other teachers at our school will benefit from this as the ESL teachers share what they have learnt. One way of reaching students is to tie some of the classroom activities to culture (this is also a main objective in the syllabus for English as a Second Language), and the other course that we wish for them to attend focuses on that - British culture - and how it can be used in the classroom to teach ESL. We believe that the courses at ADC College together with eTwinning and contacts made at the courses will benefit students and teachers greatly. This makes sense after all – only qualified, motivated and informed school staff can prepare their students for the future. To find themselves as part of a teachers' network with participants from all over Europe will be a great inspiration. This inspiration will also reach other teachers - not only in our school, but at schools from all over Värmdö muncipality - as our three teachers have committed to give seminars in which they share what they have learnt and how they have used it in their classrooms. This will help us to create a local network where all schools work towards the same goal - to find ways to integrate everyone, no matter what your background is, in education in general and learning languages more specifically.
