Creating a Network to Achieve Standardisation in European Farriery Education

The project will create a European certification programme for European farriers, building upon the success of a previously fundedLeonardo da Vinci project which agreed standards for shoeing horses for European farriers. Project partners will achieve this goal by disseminating a European standard in farriery to farrier schools and instructors; ensuring that the European standard in farriery is commonly known and accepted by linking individual farriers to schools/associations linked with European Federation of Farriers Associations (EFFA); reaching an agreement with members of the EFFA with regard to the validation of the new certificate in their country; advertising the new certificate across the European equine industry; establishing training for farrier trainers in preparation for launch of EFFA certificate and launching pilot examinations for the new certification. The project proposes to establish an examination committee for European farriers that can agree minimum standards for the farrier certificate and its corresponding examinations. A handbook will outline these minimum standards and requirements. Farrier schools will be checked and accredited before being allowed to deliver exams for the EFFA certification. Centrally organised exams will be made available at EFFA events to allow members of non-accredited schools to take exams. Project results will be disseminated through the EFFA website, magazine and annual general meeting as well as through specialist equine publications.
