Cosmic underground
Date du début: 1 mai 2012,

Cosmic Underground is a succession of culture and history of four European post communist countries based in the Baltic Sea – Estonia, Latvia and Poland. It is about exploring their identity, struggle for independence and fight for freedom of speech and thought. During a one month trip in September 2012 in a specially developed cargo train artists from each country will provide metaphorical works depicting transformation which took place in those countries. This Tallin/Guimarães Express will stop only in a few cities post or soon to be ECC: Tallinn 2011/Riga 2014/Wroclaw 2016 / and smallers cities: Paldiski (Estonian post nuclear submarine base), Bydgoszcz (Polish industrial city) etc ending it's trip in Guimarães the 2012 ECC (Portugal). The train will consist of eight cargo wagons. Each country will have substantial responsibility in the production and development of the project – Three of the wagons will be prepared by artists from one of the post comunism countries. This amazing experience in search of Baltic Sea countries common self-identity will address scientific concepts and present them not only in a spectacular way for the eyes or ears but especially for the mind. This merge of a range of European artists, curators and audience is put together by so called "probLEMs" – philosophical questions asked by polish novelist Stanisław Lem. The main theme of the plot focused on estrangement and cultural shock can be easily compared to search of identity in EU by post communist countries such as Poland, Estonia, Latvia . In Guimarães the 2012 ECC we want to ask about the consequences of technological progress and their effect on our sociocultural evolution and whether some sociocultural advances are worth the price we may pay for losing part of our nature. We want to clash with modern Europe. Same probLems given to Baltic Sea artists will be developed by Portuguese artists so that one can compare and exchange approach.
