Cooperation in Intercomprehension

CINCO - Training Intercomprehension for cooperationLanguage policies developed by the European Commission have supported, for years, the respect of multilingualism and the consequent development of plurilingual citizens. In the field of language teaching, many fundamental studies have been published, notably on pluralistic approaches and, more specifically, intercomprehension (IC), a concept which is now recognized as essential to the development of plurilingual skills. Many European projects have produced support materials for learning IC, easily accessible online. However, the concept and its applications are still unknown in formal training, either at school or professional level.Today, the various European organizations of social and educational volunteers are gathered in international collaboration networks. Communication between partners is often confronted with problems of linguistic diversity and English language communication is chosen in most cases. However, it is difficult to speak with precision, depth and clarity, and misunderstandings are common. Associations of Romance language countries face common challenges and seek new solutions. To integrate IC in the vocational training of workers in these organizations responds to clearly expressed needs. The collaboration between a network of IC specialists and a network of associations will lead to the adaptation of existing educational materials of IC to specific professional needs, by creating a modular training in a system of blended learning. The products will be available online. They will be composed of structured sets of materials organized in different scripts of activities, and a collaborative work platform. These scripts will be tested in the context of a training course for the employees of the associations that will use both face-to-face sessions and online individual tutorials. The results of these activities and the assessment of the learning achieved will improve the device and validate the approach. The validated scripts (modules) will then be available for free access to a wider target audience. They can be used as part of training offered by the associations themselves, to their usual target audiences, or through courses offered later by the network of trainers in other settings where international cooperation is a standard approach which is essential for the development of professional activities. The impact of this experience will thus touch a much wider public than the one that is presently gathered around CINCO.
