Conventional and e-Learning Gas Engineering Centre

The project will create and maintain a virtual e-learning centre for vocational education in natural gas engineering. The virtual centre will target training at gas industry engineers and will involve co-operation between university and industrial partners across Europe, in an effort to develop a comprehensive network able to support and maintain an up-to-date e-learning platform. At the start of the project a survey will be undertaken to establish the educational needs of engineers in the gas industry. A range of educational modules will be developed by the project partners able to be delivered via the project's multi-media e-learning platform. The modules will cover topics such as: gas production; underground storage and sequestration problems; gas distribution; gas usage, end user safety and environmental protection; quality management and human resources management. Training materials will be delivered in a variety of ways to include a publication on particle technology, computer-based tutorials, virtual laboratories and videos, with all material being able to be applied through formal teaching channels, or accessed through distance learning and/or self-study. The training courses, both conventional and e-based, further expect accreditation by the partner universities. Project partners will meet 2-3 times a year to ensure the smooth operation and development of the project and will establish an administrative unit, as a commercial enterprise, in each of the partner countries. The administrative unit will seek external, non-Leonardo funding to establish the e-learning platform as a viable commercial enterprise beyond the Leonardo funding phase. A wide-ranging dissemination platform is planned that will include representation at country-based vocational conferences in addition to temporary and permanent exhibitions. Dissemination will focus upon contacts within the gas industry and within VET institutions.
