CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED LEARNING (CLIL)
Date du début: 1 août 2014, Date de fin: 31 juil. 2015 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Our present school plan concerns the introduction of the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) principles and tools to EFL teaching. CLIL is about teaching different subjects (content) - such as History, Geography, Biology, Maths, etc - in a foreign language within the school curriculum. The method seeks to integrate subject teachers with a B2-level linguistic competence into teaching their subject in the foreign language as well as foreign-language teachers. The dominant CLIL language in Europe at the moment is English. CLIL aims at improving the learners' linguistic competence in the foreign language, promoting multilingualism and viewing language as a social product. Since the last school term (2012-2013) the CLIL method has been experimentally applied to EFL teaching, in some classes of our School, an initiative of the EFL teacher who teaches these classes. Astronomy is taught in English, whereas original, learner-based educational material is used. The EFL teacher in charge prepares the material herself , using ICT tools and taking the students' linguistic level and needs into account. Within this framework the EFL teacher in charge of implementing CLIL suggested the organised, practical training in the CLIL principles and tools through an Erasmus+ grant. Her proposal had to do with the participation of teachers in training courses and workshops on CLIL for classroom use. Initially the EFL teachers could take part in such training, and then the trained teachers could educate the other ones. The Head of the School and the Board of Teachers accepted the proposal as it was consistent with the School's educational planning for the introduction of innovative, creative and progressive teaching tools in teaching different school subjects. After some research, the School agreed to the EFL teacher participation in one (01) training course on the implementation of CLIL in secondary class in Oxford (UK) and in one (01) workshop about creativity and thinking skills in designing educational material in Riga , Latvia. Incorporating CLIL in foreign-language teaching attaches added value to our School's role as an educational organisation, as it : a. promotes multilingualism and views language as a cultural product b. follows the scientific developments in Europe and internationally and experiments in innovation and modern scientific tools c. views the teachers as action researchers and gives then space to carry out classroom research d. exhibits extroversion and social responsibility e. emphasises on teacher training on th e ground of lifelong learning. Therefore using the CLIL tools in the foreign-language class is expected to change the value of the subject itself as well as its effectiveness. It is also expected to stress multilingualism and the functional character of a foreign language.
