Competence Network for Introduction of Modern ICTE Technologies in Vocational Learning in Social Systems Simulation and Research

The main aim of the project is to reduce the current trend in students opting to study Social Sciences at the expense of Science and Engineering courses and to further arm Social Science students with knowledge and training in ICT and Electronics (ICTE). The project will introduce modern teaching methods, employing aspects of Science and Engineering into Social Sciences curricula with project partners promoting a Social Simulations Network for Social Science training. A two-year, experimental Social Science Masters degree programme, using ICTE, will be introduced at Vidzeme University College in Latvia and will be supported in this by the 8 project partners from 4 European countries. The Masters degree programme will combine 3 major modules, namely, Social, General and Engineering. The Engineering module will include training on data processing systems design, social systems simulation technologies & tools, computer architecture & data transmission networks and e-applications. Courses will be taught using traditional teaching methods in addition to e-based learning. The Masters degree programme will be piloted within the tourism industry in Latvia before it is launched on other training areas and social science programmes. Alongside the developed course, a short vocational guidance course for secondary school students will be developed in Latvia to encourage young students to think about use of ICTE skills. Secondary school teachers will be provided with training to enable them to deliver the course. Thus, end project results will comprise the outline curriculum for the Masters degree programme, a supporting training guide and a vocational guidance course. Project results will be disseminated through a variety of means to include publications, workshops and direct mailing, with the latter making use of existing partner networks and of the European Social Simulation Association.
