The training course “Compass: Human Rights Education for Youth" was implemented in Fasano by the Association ASAP Europe with the valuable help of the Associations Human Rights and Equalities Charnwood (UK); SMIT Creator (Poland); Association for progress, education and lobbying PEL (Macedonia); Youth EPICenter (Lithuania); Inter Alia (Greece); Super Tineri (Romania) andYouth Leaders Coalition (Latvia). The project (Erasmus+ Key Action 1 Mobility of youth workers) was held among the dates 18-26 February 2015, each partner took part with 3 participants, volunteers and professional youth workers and youth leaders (totally, with the staff, we were 30). All of them were motivated to engage with human rights issues as active citizens in their local communities, this was the main criteria set in agreement with the partner for the selection process The project was an eight-day training course on the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Education Programme and focused on a concrete, practical tool and resource for Human Rights Education – Council of Europe’s Compass Manual (2012 revised and updated edition) – the no. 1 manual for HRE across Europe. The idea to organize a project on this topic came into our minds during a training on Human Rights Education, in which Asap was partner, held by Human Rights and Equalities Charnwood in Loughborough in August 2013. The course had an immediate impact for us resulted in a series of local activities held in Fasano by ASAP, including a photography competition for young people on human rights issues (http://www.asapeurope.eu/en/news-archivie/item/86-30-scatti-per-i-diritti-umani-international-photography-contest.html). Afterwards we developed the idea and the application form jointly with HREC, combining our UK partner’s experience in the field with ASAP’s experience in international and European youth work and needs assessment for Fasano and Puglia. The objectives of our training course were: - To share and review good practice in human rights education in partner countries - To develop participants’ competences in human rights education - To train participants in using the Compass HRE Manual - To increase the quality of future Erasmus Plus projects - To mainstream human rights education in youth work - To strengthen partnerships among partner organisations The project was entirely based on non-formal methods. Learners were involved on a voluntary basis and the non-formal activities were carefully planned, to foster the participants' personal, social and professional development. About the impact, it was achieved on multiple levels: - Participants: New knowledge, skills and competences necessary in implementing Human Rights Education Activities; - Partner organisations: Increased capacity to organise projects within the Erasmus+ Programme - ASAP: knowledge about human rights realities in EU countries and cultures European countries; - Local young people: Greater visibility of ASAP and the Erasmus+ Programme. The project met a number of Erasmus + (Youth) objectives and priorities, including overall Erasmus+ objectives, specific objectives of its Youth in Action sub-programme and its priorities. Participants were stimulated to reflect on the essential characteristics of European society and the role of Human Rights in protecting core European values. They were encouraged to play an active role in their communities. Participants were trained in campaigning for Human Rights locally and how to mobilise other stakeholders around human rights issues in order to increase participation of young people in the system of representative democracy. The project is having a strong multiplying effect as this course was designed specifically in order to train participants in the use of Compass 2012 HRE Manual and equipping them with skills to become Human Rights Multipliers.
